COSEE-OS is one of 10 Centers and is thematic in nature • Principal institutions are University of Maine, UNH & Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences • Long-term goal is to help the COSEE Network reach rural and inland audiences GUIDING QUESTIONS Why are oceans relevant to people who live far from coasts? NASA creates materials that make us feel as if we've visited other planets, why can't we do the same for the oceans?
Build and train educator-scientist teamswho work together to distinguish meaningful "key messages" for K – 12 audiences
Use concept mapping to show ocean-climate relationships, allowing scientists & educators to "be on the same page" • Translate maps into innovative multimedia products
"Teaching Physical Science by Ocean Inquiry"was offered at University of Maine in spring 2007 • First-ever cross-linked* course between the College of Education and School of Marine Sciences • Course is designed for pre-service teachers and Marine Science majors who may consider becoming educators *"Problems in Marine Science" & "Workshop in Secondary Education"
"Teaching Science by Ocean Inquiry" is an annual summer workshop – held at the UMaine Darling Marine Center -- with the goal of using the ocean as a vehicle for teaching science • Help develop inquiry-based units for teaching physical sciences • Create "hands on" activities that can be used in basic classroom settings • Foster sustained networking among teachers, scientists & experts in education
The 2006 "Teaching Science by Ocean Inquiry" workshop included Tracy Vassiliev • Grade 8 Accelerated Physical Science teacher • Focus on two of the workshop concepts employed by Tracy during the 2006-07 academic year: • Density • Forces of Fluids Picture by Marney Pratt, Adjunct Professor in Biology at Bowdoin
Density • Did NOT mention “density” or provide formula (=M/V) • Class Demo • “Soda Demo” (cola & diet cola) • Group Stations • Blocks - different materials with the same volume (focus on mass) • Blocks - different materials with the same mass (focus on volume) • Blocks - same materials (pine) with different volumes & masses (focus on the relationship of mass and volume) 1999, Digital iceberg composite by Ralph A. Clevenger, a professional nature and underwater photographer
Density • Informal assessment • Group prediction using the “Soda Demo” • Tiny can of cola and larger can of diet cola • Introduce the term density along with the formula • Determine the density of water • Mass of 10 ml of water • Upcoming year’s challenge • Design group experiments to determine the volume of a drop of water www.arroyoseco.org/images/water_drop.jpg
Forces in Fluids • Introductory SCUBA lesson • Maine Maritime Academy • Connection & Concepts • Pressure (P=Force/Area) • Sea level = 1 Atm • 10 m = 2 Atms • Boyle’s Law P = V • Holding breath could cause lungs to burst • Henry’s Law P = Absorption • N2 absorption (decompression sickness) • Field trip was not mandatory
Workshop Reflections • 2006-07 Grade 8 Accelerated Physical Science • 17 Students • Qualitative Student Results • Students were engaged • Invested • Had fun • 2 students voiced interest pursuing Ocean Sciences • 10 students would like to pursue SCUBA certification • Quantitative • 100% meet or exceed standards on common assessment on Forces • 2007 Maine Educational Assessment Released Questions - Two were on density • 100% of class answered correctly
Now for the demo... this prototype interface is based on the concept map developed by scientists & educators (Slide 4)
The "Climate Change" overview animation shows how Earth's tilt contributes to seasonal change
In the "Earth View" we see that "Sea Level" is connected to the "Water Cycle"
We see an animation about factors that affect sea level, such as mass discontinuities deep within the earth
Sea level is closely tied to "El Niño / La Niña" as shown in this overview animation
El Niño conditions can help decrease the number of hurricanes by pulling the jet stream southward
A "Major Storms" video shows rainfall accumulation from 2003's Hurricane Isabel, imaged by NASA's TRMM satellite
The process of "Upwelling" is highly correlated with major fisheries, as shown in this map
Moving into the "Close-up View," we focus on the polar regions and "Ocean salinity"
A data image of sea surface salinity shows that the North Atlantic is the world's saltiest ocean
Connections among concepts are revealed by an interactive "expert concept map" with zoom & navigation functions
The map is also color-coded to reveal all concepts' alignment with the National Science Education Standards
The concept map can be used to navigate to the "nearby concept" of "Primary Producers"
A video shows how hurricanes can promote upwelling & primary productivity in their wake
A related concept -- "Biological Pump"-- includes an animation of how excessive nutrients can result in "coastal dead zones"
It's time for... COSEE-Ocean Systems Edition
Food for thought 100 200 300 400 500
Thanks for playing!! COSEE-Ocean Systems Edition
Tools & techniques being developed and evaluated by COSEE-OSfocus on concepts... Why? Basic concepts can applied to various disciplines By improving science literacy using the engaging context of oceans, we hope to reach the broadest possible audience THANK YOU! This degree of tilt gives planet earth the right "seasoning"
Fire that waitress!!"She" dumped over 400 trillion tons of water on the North Atlantic!
"Excuse me, I think the chef may have over-salted this ocean..."
The anchovies on your pizza probably came from this type of ocean zone
