Introducing WikiGE By Elmaziye Ozgur Kufi
The study began as the ‘EfolioWiki’ experience at SFL with a group of volunteer teachers in January 2005. The aim of the study was to: • Turn the top-down Academic Review Scheme (PDS files compilation) into a bottom up scheme owned by teachers. • Focus on professional development rather than evaluation.
Positive remarks about ‘EfolioWiki’ in the interviews but problems related to use: • Only a small group among volunteer teachers used ‘EfolioWiki’. • Major developments in the research context. • Loss of assessment documents of PDS files> election of a new review board to re-evaluate files> provision of feedback by this board> chaos at SFL. • Proposal from administration to separate MLD from SFL. Result: Uncertainty and discomfort.
Steering Committee: set up to look into the academic review process • The Committee redesigns the Academic Review Scheme and submits it to the department administration. • The new scheme allows for e-folio construction and its main focus is professional development.
September 2005 • Separation of MLD from SFL. MLD officially becomes part of the GE department. • No feedback from the department administration related to the scheme designed by the Steering Committee. • No information about the construction of PDS files by instructors/ senior instructors.
March 2006: I cannot continue my research in this way! What can I do??? I decide to: • change the focus of the study slightly: e-folio construction > wiki. • involve all teachers in MLD/GE. • revise web design taking ‘Wikipedia’ as an example: Efoliowiki > WikiGE.
WikiGE: An interactive web environment, an information management scheme for the GE department. It can be used for: • displaying informationabout GE, MLD, GEED and ENGL courses, teams, teachers and their classes. • conducting discussions among teachers or students. • facilitating the organization of events and facilities. and….
It can be used for: • providing extra support or information for students. Students can produce work in an on-line environment; write their portfolios, essays or work on their vocabulary with their peers. Teachers can provide guidance and feedback on student work outside class hours. In short, WikiGE makes collaborative knowledge construction possible and saves on time and paper.
We tell our students that learning is a life-long process. What about teacher learning ? Is it also a life-long process? If you think so, if you believe that there is no end to teacher development, you will be willing to use ‘WikiGE’ because…
With WikiGE teachers can become learners again and start practising what they preach. With WikiGE teachers: • can organize an on-line learning environment for themselves and their students. • get the opportunity to reflect on their teaching/learning experiences and share them with colleagues. What do research participants think??? Time will show…
