What is AMR? • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the ability of a microorganism (like bacteria, viruses, and some parasites) to grow/survive in the presence of an antimicrobial (such as antibiotics) that should be capable of killing it when given at the correct dose • Antibiotics are natural or synthetic substances that inhibit the growth of or destroy bacteria • As a result, standard treatments become ineffective, infections persist and may spread to others. • Bacteria can become multi-resistant • There are some infections that are not treatable with any available antibiotics
Antibiotic Resistance vs Antibiotic Residues • Antibiotic residues are traces of antibiotics and associated metabolites that remain in meat and milk derived from animals that have been treated with antibiotics, with a violative level defined as one that is above the MRL. • Observing WP prevents residues entering food chain but has no effect on development of AMR. • Any use of antibiotics leads to AMR over time and reduces the effectiveness of antibiotics
What are CIAs? • WHO categorises certain antimicrobials used in human health as ‘critically important’. • The CIAs are further categorised into Highest Priority CIAs (HP-CIAs) • Drugs of last resort in human medicine when 1st line therapy fails • Strict Controls
DAFM POLICY ON HP-CIAs • Advice on use: • Should; • NOT be used prophylactically • NOT be used as first line of treatment in animals. • ONLY be used when there are no effective alternative antimicrobials available for the respective target species and indication. • Be used based on culture and susceptibility testing
