Energy Production • Hydroelectric • Wind Power • Solar Power • Nuclear Power ohld.ag.utk.edu/enr/images/energy.jpg
Hydroelectric Power • Hydroelectric, or water power, is produced when the water rushes through the penstock and spins the turbine. The shaft that joins the turbine and generator spins through electro-magnets in the generator and produces the energy which is sent through the power lines to our homes. • Dams also aid in flood control and irrigation. http://library.thinkquest.org/15215/media/hydroelectric_dam.gif
Wind Turbines Touchet Windmills • The way that power is generated with a wind turbine is similar to the way it is generated in a dam. Wind spins the blades in a wind turbine instead of water.
Solar Power • Solar power is produced by heating water to make steam. • A steam generator than produces the electricity. • Power is also produced by the sun by charging batteries.
Nuclear Power • Plutonium is used to heat water for steam generators. • Dangerous toxic waste is created. • There are negative effects on the environment. • Plutonium is a nonrenewable resource.
