Two Key Font Types • Serif Style Font • Letters have little feet. • Good for lots of reading. • Sans Serif Style Font • Letters are smooth and uniform. • Good for headings and slides.
Serif (old style) • Times New Roman Font • Best fonts for lots of reading • can be slightly slanted with a slight thick/thin transition in the thinness of the stroke (serif) of each letter.
Modern (a serif style) • Modern No 20 Font • More mechanical style • Serifs are horizontal and bolder • Dramatic change in the thick/thin transition. • Not good for extended reading
Slab Serif • Rockwell Font • Horizontal serifs. • Leads to thick vertical lines • Best when used at a large size,
Sans Serif • Arial Font • No serifs (feet) • Usually monoweight • Means the letters are all the same thickness.
Script Styles of Font • Brush Script MT Font • Typefaces that appear to be hand lettered • Some scripts have letters that connect. A calligraphy look. • This example is “Freestyle Script”. • This example is “French Script”. • This example is “Lucida Calligraphy”.
Decorative • Easy to identify, fun, distinctive, powerful but limited use is good, difficult to read an entire page of it.This example is “Chiller” • This example is “Forte”. • This example is “Curlz MT”. • This example is “Jokerman”. • This example is “Matura”.
Things to Consider • Contrast between size and style. • Is style appropriate to message. • Serif and Sans Serif fonts should be used appropriately. • Change Type, not just the style. • Too many font styles (and colors) take away from the message.
