Transitive Verbs • It’s quite simple to identify transitive verbs, since they have two important characteristics that define them: • They are action verbs • They always have a direct object • Ex: The salesclerk showed the buyer the wide spectrum of colors available for the couch he wanted to buy. • The transitive verb in the sentence above would be ‘showed’ and it’s an action verb whose direct object is ‘spectrum’.
Intransitive Verbs • An intransitive verb can be identified by two characteristics as well: • It is an action verb • It does nothave a direct object • Ex.: The circumspect Christian repented at Church on Sunday. • The intransitive verb in the sentence above would be ‘repented’; it’s an action verb and it doesn’t have a direct object.
Practice Identify if the underlined verb is transitive or intransitive. The despicable criminal arrived to court. She found the instructions to be perspicuous and she assembled the couch with ease. The introspective girl pondered all day. My son caused a spectacle when he destroyed the store’s main display.
Practice #2 • Under the auspices of McRonald’s, the committee was able to buy the materials they needed. • Their victory at the Math Bowl competition marked the beginning of their auspicious new year at school. • Although the stories she told to the class seemed to be true, they were just specious rubbish and she’d never actually met Taylor Lautner. • The specter of their father’s death loomed over the Rodriguez household and nightmares of seeing his ghost were common.
