They rule every walk of our life providing a lot of ease. There is a flipside, however. More the machines that are run on some fuel and involve internal combustion, more the concern for the harmful emissions they create. Internal combustion produces carbon monoxide and many residual gases like nitrogen oxides. These are believed to aggravate asthmatic conditions and react with the oxygen in the air to produce ozone. As degrading environment became the prime concern of the world, reduction of harmful emission has been on top of the charts. Early nineteenth century ushered in the industrial revolution. Then the world saw a spurt in the automobile industry. Both the industry became a barometer for the growing economy of the country. Apart from being a guzzler of natural resources it was also choking the planet Earth. In the year 1930 a French mechanical engineer invented the catalytic converter which would be boon to not only the environment but for increasing the efficiency of a machine. The oil industry started using it and it took almost half a century thus for the automobile industry to induct it. As competition grew in the industry every brand was trying to improve the performance by consuming less of fuel. Yet the catalytic converter was avoided for fear of increasing the cost of the product. Air pollution regulations were the reason that forced the automobile industry to finally make an addition. Many innovations have ushered in the new technology of two and three way converters. Overall, the catalytic converter is now a part of our lives.
