  1. Blog4: Globalrefininggroup.com The Afterlife Of Your Catalytic Converter Catalytic converters are devices that are fitted into vehicles with the objective of reducing the toxicity of emissions coming out from the exhaust. It involves the use of a catalyst made from some rare metals, which induce a redox reaction inside the vehicle to achieve the objective. This technology was invented by a French scientist by the name of Eugene Houdry. It became widely spread when the USA moved towards the goal of reducing air pollution by benchmarking emission standards. Ever since this device came into use, business began to flourish on all sides of it. Manufacturing, selling, and finally, catalytic converter recycling. A scrap catalytic converter is worth more than one could imagine, if one thinks about all the parts and processes involved. Most catalytic converter buyers quote the price that includes the scrapped car as well. You could remove the device on your own and take it to a dealer yourself. The price it fetches for you will depend on the condition of the converter and how much catalyst it contains. Catalyst used is composed of precious metals, which can fetch you good prices. On an average, this is what the catalysts cost: Rhodium - $800 per ounce Platinum - $986 per ounce Palladium - $620 per ounce You catalytic converter may or may not contain these metals. It depends on which region the manufacturer belongs to. It is always good to check things yourself by asking the manufacturer before taking the converter to the market for sale.
