He was abandoned by his father as an infant, and abandoned by his mother at the age of 10. • He was then raised by his maternal grandmother, Benita Gay Gutierrez, a factory worker, and step-grandfather Refugio Gutierrez, a builder. In 1993, Lopez married Ann Serrano. The couple has one child together (Mayan).
