Server Migration Approach Approach Insight has multi-phased approach to upgrading or migrating any Windows Server Environment. Each server is classified at a specific risk level (Low, Medium or High) based upon specific criteria such as impact to the business, complexity, etc. Insight performs a detailed discovery effort in the initial phase of any Server Migration or Upgrade which captures all relevant data such as Services on each server, Applications, Databases, etc. The information is then analyzed in Application Rationalization phase which will determine the risk level of each server. The next phase of the project focuses on the migration and post-migration support. Insight uses a pre-determined pre-migration and post-migration checklist with commonalities and customizations specific to each server. Each item on both checklists are verified to be complete, at which time the server is transitioned over to the customer for future support. The post-migration support period is typically defined as 24 hours post-migration. Once both phases of the project are complete, the documentation is provided for each server and the project is completed.
Server Migration Methodology All Servers are categorized into Low, Medium & High Risk. Each category assumes different levels of risk and impact to the environment. Low • Examples include SUP, File & Print, etc. • Low risk to end user and infrastructure environments • Vendor support is readily available • Utilizes ‘known’ or ‘off-the-shelf’ technology • Single Purpose Server • Minimal risk to the environment and/or business impact • Examples such as AD, Citrix, etc. • Medium risk to end user and infrastructure environments • Vendor support is available but may require increased support • Business and/or application owner involvement • Database services • Medium risk to the environment and/or business impact Medium • Custom applications, servers with multiple workloads, servers without identified owners with complex workflows, etc. • Servers with multiple applications and/or function • Servers with high potential for business impact with a sustained planned or unplanned outage • Servers with large volumes of data (i.e. clustered file servers, SQL, etc.) High 7
Discovery Effort Insight can perform the Discovery & Analysis with a variety of approaches including 3rd party utilities such as BDNA or the MAP Toolkit, and/or Business/Application Owner Interviews. Whether it’s a detailed discovery with stakeholder interviews or utilizing the tools such as BDNA, both processes will provide a detailed discovery & migration process. We recommend either of the approaches below as a standard structure to performing the server migration. Traditional Approach • Application Inventory • Coordinating & Analyzing data • Stakeholder Interviews • Technical Discovery without tools • Project Management • Hybrid Approach • Use 3rd Party tool to perform application inventory & technical discovery (Reduces Discovery Effort) • Coordinating & Analyzing data • Stakeholder Sign-Off • Project Management
Application Migration Strategy & Phases Insight breaks up the applications into a High Complexity, Medium Complexity, and Low Complexity. These numbers are estimates based on application industry standards and previous experience. Estimated Breakdown of Customers Server Environment: • High Complexity (10%) • Medium Complexity (30%) • Low Complexity (60%) Each category has different time allotments broken into a two phased approach: • Phase I • Application & Dependency Discovery • Service & Security Documentation • Application/Business Owner Interview & Sign-Off • Pre-Migration Checklist • Phase II • Migration • Post-Migration Checklist • Post-Migration Support for up to 24 hours • Time estimates are split between each phase, with a higher emphasis on Phase I – Discovery & Analysis • Typical deployments are broken 65% Phase I / 35% Phase II • Work effort is determined based upon server classification and varies based upon application complexity of the environment
Engagement & Deliverables An engagement focused on Server Migration whether it’s to 2008 or 2012 would encompass the following effort: • Discovery & Analysis phase – focused on pre-migration checklist, application & service dependencies, etc. • Migration phase – focused on migration, post-migration checklist, & post-migration support. Each phase would include work effort based upon the No. of Servers and Complexity of the Environment. The team typically includes Server Engineering, Architectural Oversight and Project Management. Expected Deliverables Include: • Detailed Discovery, Analysis & Documentation (Pre-Migration) • Pre-Migration Checklist & Detailed Migration Plan • Migration of Identified Servers • Post-Migration Support (Up to 24 Hours) & Post-Migration Checklist
Engagement Structure Migration Discovery Support • Ensure configuration of OS on Imaged VM or Physical Hardware (i.e. Patching, A/V, etc.) • Verify network Configuration • Configure Storage if applicable • Install necessary applications & perform configuration • Migrate data as required • Verify with Business/Application Owner application & services are functioning properly once upgraded • Go/No-Go (Verification of Pre-Reqs for Upgrade) • Migration (Actual migration/upgrade of server) • Application & Service Validation • Post-Migration Support • Services • Network & Port Configuration • Security Configuration & Modeling • Data (Local and SAN) • Application Configuration & Dependency • Database Configuration (If applicable) • Configured Items (CMDB) • Monitoring • Business & Application Owners • Operating System
Sample Timelines • High Risk Servers (Est. 30%) • 210 Servers Per Month • 6 Full-Time Consultants • 1 Dedicated PM • 1 Dedicated ARCH • 35 Servers Per Week • 6 Servers Per Con Below are highlights in the amount of servers migrated per week. This information is based upon a 1 year timeline, upgraded 2,800 in total. Low Risk Servers (Est. 40%): 224 Servers Per Month 6 Full-Time Consultants 1 Dedicated PM 1 Dedicated Arch 52 Servers Per Week 9 Servers per Con, Per Week Medium Risk Servers (Est. 30%): 240 Servers Per Month 8 Full-Time Consultants 1 Dedicated PM 1 Dedicated ARCH 56 Servers Per Week 7 Servers Per Con
