Window Server 2003 End of Support • Microsoft will end support for Windows Server 2003 on July 14, 2015 – Microsoft will no longer provide automatic fixes, updates, or online technical assistance • On 23 January 2014, IBM confirmed its plans to sell x86 business to Lenovo for $2.3 Billion • HP and Microsoft are working together to move enterprises onto Windows Server 2012 R2, investing in future of X86 business

Doing nothing is not an option Risk • Windows updates – including security updates – will no longer be available • Microsoft will no longer support Windows Server 2003 on a virtualized platform • Regulatory issues like FDA that require platform certification Cost • High cost custom support agreements (CSAs) – Fees for a custom support agreement’s first year are usually in the range of $200K and can compound • Existing physical hardware may be 5-7 years old, expensive to maintain Complexity • No direct upgrade path to Windows Server 2012 (particularly from x86 architecture) • Need to address applications as well as the OS (legacy, ISV, custom) • Can’t take advantage of modern IT infrastructure and management tools
