Protecting State Association Data in the Cloud
Tech Impact’s mission • is to ensure all nonprofits can use technology to better serve our world.
Agenda What is the cloud and why consider it? The lingo Disaster recovery v. business continuity How backup fits in and considerations What to store and where to store it Cloud refresher Resources Q & A
CLOUD: General term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the internet
Why the Cloud • Predictable cost • Lower risk • Less anxiety • Scalable
Lots of terms Used more or less interchangeably Some are not applicable Fair warning: corporate speak ahead.
Disaster • When we think of disaster we think of….. • We usually don’t think of…..
BC & DR • Who has a business continuity plan? • Who has a disaster recovery plan? • Is everyone backing up their servers and computers? Everything on them?
Where Does Backup Fit In? • Provides basic assurances that you will not loose your data • First step in resiliency planning • Can support or be in addition to Business Continuity (BC) and Disaster Recovery (DR) • We’ll be discussing backup and disaster recovery specifically today: • BC planning is very complicated • BC planning has as much to do with people as it does with technology
Backup What should we consider? • Types of Data • Retention • Monitoring • Recovery • Backup Location
What Level of Backup • Bare Metal • Data Level What kinds of data do you have? • Files • Exchange (email) • Databases • Virtual Hard Disk Drives (VHDs) • System State Types of Data
Retention & Versioning • Retention Policies Include • Time before deleted files are removed • Number/age of versions that are maintained • Your decision should be influenced by: • Your Intent (protect against user deletion vs hardware failure) • Time period before an issue would be noticed • Storage costs • Legal requirements
Monitoring • What to monitor? • Failed backups • Backups with missed files • Backups that have stalled • Backups without any files • Backups with too few files • Backups that were missed • Backups that took too long • How are we notified? Sage Advice of the Day (SAOTD) There is no substitute for regular test restores
Recovery • Oops, something happened • How do we get the data? • How long does it take? • Can I do it myself? • How hard is it? Is it worth it? But wait! . Restore ≠ Recovery • So how do we get things back up and running? • What do we need to rebuild or reinstall • How do I insert the data I’ve restored from backup
Location Offsite (Manual) Benefits • Cheap • Backup Everything • Protects against site failure Drawbacks • Unreliable • High legal risk • Requires training • Impossible to monitor Cloud Benefits • Protects against site failure • Low anxiety (reliable) • Zero intervention required • Restore to anywhere • Easy to monitor Drawbacks • (More) expensive • Requires an internet connection • Requires expertise Onsite (Local) Benefits • Cheap • Backup Everything Drawbacks • Does not protect against site failure • Very hard to monitor • Does not protect against site failure
What is npVault? Flexibility Here’s a secret: Not everything needs to be backed up online! • If we lost this we’d… • Go out of business online backup • Be heartbroken either • Be kind of sad local backup • Be glad we don’t have to clean it up neither • Still need to monitor both local backup and online backup • Local storage is MUCH cheaper
Where is it? Is there only one data center? Is it backed up? Is it secure? What is The Cloud?
