The Argument • Famously put forward by St Thomas Aquinas in his Summa Theologica • It is an a priori argument • He presented Five Ways to prove the existence of God – this covers 3 of them • The Way of Motion (everything we experience ‘moves’); The Way of Causality (all things are caused to ‘move’); The Way of Potentiality (all of these things we experience are contingent) • He believed there had to be a First Cause which was ‘necessary’ in order to start off the chain of causes that resulted in the universe. • This First Cause had to be a necessary being who did not require a cause (God).
