  2. “in media res” • Write the definition for “in media res” - Latin for “in the midst of affairs” – the narrative starts in the middle or end of the story, rather than the beginning.

  3. Literary analysis: epic hero The epic hero is defined or revealed by his deeds. As we read, look for qualities appropriate for an epic hero. Big question: What do Odysseus’ deeds reveal about his character?

  4. Conflict (lines 1-5) What type of conflict is introduced in Odysseus’ initial statements at the banquet?

  5. Literary analysis (lines 7-28) • How does Odysseus portray himself in his speech? • Are his comments about himself appropriate for an epic hero?

  6. CFU (lines 41-47) Write: • What happened to those who ate the lotus flower? • Why doesn’t Odysseus want his men to eat the flower? • Where is his home?

  17. Literary analysis: epic hero • One characteristic of an epic hero is that they can do many things well. Odysseus makes his own raft as skillfully as a shipwright and successfully lashes together teams of sheep and slings his men under each team. These would be difficult to accomplish under the best of conditions!
