The Current Debate According to Jewish tradition, God told Abraham to circumcize all males as sign of the covenant between God and the Jewish people “In actual practice, many Jews circumcise because of cultural conformity, not religious reasons. Based on a national survey of American Jews, ‘90 percent define being Jewish as being a member of a cultural or ethnic group.’” http://www.jewishcircumcision.org/info.htm Some European countries have seen petitions against circumcision on the basis of protecting the human rights of children. 120 - appleby
