FIRST WORLD WAR DRESSING STATION What happened to you when you got injured or ill during the war
Trenches were dangerous • Soldiers were at risk of getting hurt or ill when living in the trenches • Trenches did not provide much protection • They were cold, wet and muddy • Soldiers could be hurt by bombs or bullets
First Aid • Some soldiers carried first aid bags • This is an original first aid bag • Compare it to our modern first aid kit in the classroom • Often soldiers needed more than first aid
Moving a casualty • Sometimes a soldier needed to go for more treatment. They would be taken by stretcher to the dressing station • At the dressing station, a soldier would be assessed and treated or moved to a hospital
At the hospital • The hospitals would be away from the fighting. • Women were allowed to work in the hospitals • Many of the soldiers were terribly injured and many died. • Some soldiers needed many months in hospital to get well again.
