Unit map You are here
Using the Powers of Ten “Poster”… • Identify words that are familiar to you. • The four benchmark scales – what does that mean to you? Put them in layman's terms. • For each of the benchmark scales, give an example of an object or thing that could be in each scale. • Interpret the units of length inmeters. Put them into layman’s terms. • What can you measure with each of those units?
Your Task • Tape your own little poster into your notebook! • You will be assigned a benchmark scale to watch for. Write down a different system or object from your designated scale. • Cue video
Happy Friday! • Refresh your group’s memory… • What are the 4 benchmark scales? • What are layman's terms for each? • Discuss and be ready to share: • Can the picnic in the video be explained at multiple scales? Can ethanol be explained at multiple scales? If so, which ones? • What might water and ethanol look like at those scales? Can you draw them?
Cool Extensions • Scale of the Universe • Cell Size and Scale
From Big to Small • Sort and place cards on the correct scale based on the Powers of 10 poster • Think about similar systems or objects at each scale. For example, what cards would belong in a plant system? How about a water system? • Could you divide the cards into six different systems? • Consider: Plants, people, water, fuel, fire and pollen • Did you and your group come up with these 6? How? Explain.
Reflection / Homework • Respond to this prompt in a paragraph. Provide evidence and examples when you can. Why do scientists think about systems at different scales? Use “scale” terminology rather than powers of 10 numbers/exponents. The math is secondary to the concept of scale! • Due Monday, 3 stamps
