  3. What is a flower? • A flower is the part of the plant that makes the seeds. • Flower Video

  4. There are four main parts of a flower. flower leaves stem roots

  5. What is the function of the root? The roots absorb water from the soil. root

  6. What is the function of the stem? The stem helps to support the plant. It also transports water & minerals. stem

  7. What is the function of the leaf? The leaves use sunlight to provide the plant with energy (photosynthesis). They also let in carbon dioxide through tiny openings called stomata. leaf

  8. What is the function of the flower? The flower helps the plant to reproduce. flower

  9. All flowers have male and female parts This is the name for the FEMALE part of the flower. pistil stamen This is the name for the MALE part of the flower.

  12. Other parts of the flower petals sepal The colorful, often bright part of the flower. They attract pollinators and are usually the reason why we buy and enjoy flowers. The parts that look like little green leaves that cover the outside of a flower bud to protect the flower before it opens. receptacle End of flower stalk

  13. Making your flower

  14. Step 1 1. Color all parts of your flower first. 2. You can color the petals any color you like  3. Then cut out all the parts of the flower. 4. Do not cut out the labels until the end.

  15. Step 2 Start by gluing down these parts first.

  16. Step 3 Finish the flower as shown. You will need to tuck the second petal inside the receptacle before you glue it down.

  17. Preparing your labels: Color the stamen, filament, anther, & filament blue. These are the male parts of the flower. Color the stigma, style, pistil & ovary pink. These are the female parts of the flower. Color the stem, sepal, receptacle, and leaf green. These are the female parts of the flower. Keep the petal label white and cut out all of the labels.

  20. On back – write down the following notes • stamen – male part (anther & filament) • anther – makes pollen • pollen – yellow powder; fertilizes eggs • pistil – female part (stigma, style, ovary) • stigma – sticky; catches pollen • style – tube that pollen travels down • ovary – contains eggs
