Policy, Strategy and Communications This theme focuses on embedding sustainability into procurement through policy and strategy, underpinned by good communications Agree on objectives and have a simple sustainable procurement plan Review and enhance sustainable procurement policy Augment the sustainable procurement policy into a strategy Review and enhance Review regularly and externally scrutinised

Procurement Process This theme focuses on embeddingsustainability into the procurement process Expenditure analysis undertaken and key sustainability impacts identified Detailed expenditure analysis undertaken, key sustainability risks assessed and used for prioritisation All contracts assessed for general sustainability risks. Targets to improve sustainability are agreed with key suppliers Detailed sustainability risks assessed for high impact contracts. A life-cycle approach is adopted Life cycle analysis is undertaken for key areas, and best practice shared with other organisations

Engaging Suppliers This theme focuses on making your organisation open and transparent to suppliers Key supplier spend analysis undertaken and suppliers targeted for engagement Detailed supplier spend analysis undertaken and supplier engagement initiated , with senior management involvement Targeted supplier engagement programme in place, including two-way communication between procurer and supplier Key suppliers identified for intensive development, sustainability audits and supply chain improvement programmes are in place Suppliers recognised as essential to organisations sustainable procurement policy and best practice shared.

  12. Measurements and Results Reporting on compliance with this theme is mandatory. The aim is to not only measure the impacts of actions taken to increase sustainable procurement but also to demonstrate the results arising from these actions. Key sustainability impacts of procurement activity identified and Detailed appraisal of the sustainability impacts of the procurement activity has been undertaken and the embed level achieved Sustainability measures refined from general departmental measures to include individual procurers and are linked to development objectives. Measures are integrated into a balanced score card approach reflecting both input and output and comparison to peer organisations made. Measures used to drive organisational sustainable development strategy direction and progress formally benchmarked with peer organisations.
