CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE • Research • Pure research – for scientific purpose to add to a body of knowledge. • Applied research - for the purpose of solving a specific problem. • Research at the CoE are based on pure research verified by means of a specific problem
CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE • Purpose • Deliver high quality manpower • Perform specific research relevant to the SANDF • Promote a culture in Radar and EW research and to provide facilities to encourage young scientists and engineers to explore the application of their interest in the military need for technologies. • Retain post graduate students within South Africa Fostering innovation in Radar & EW within the Defence Related Industry
CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE • Aim of the Centre of Excellence • Strive for excellence in a focused Radar &EW technology area relevant to the Technology users (Navy, Air Force & Army). • Enhance expertise and research capabilities in the field of Radar &EW. • Promote partnerships in research and development between the Radar & EW communities. • Strive to meet the increasing demand for engineers and scientist capable in technologies applicable to Radar & EW. • Transfer expertise relevant to the Technology Users into and from Universities (closer cooperation between SANDF and Universities). • Work with Industry in an attempt to transfer the gained knowledge base resulted from the research at the Universities driven by the operational interaction with the Technology Users.
CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE • Governance and management • Project Ledger provide the funding. • DTD, TMA, Radar & EW Division, DRDB, AACB and AASB mandate the research areas. • Arms of Service, Acquisition Division, Defence Related Industry and SARIG influence the research areas. • Annual Knowledge Base Event is an opportunity for the CoE’s to provide justification. • Daily management of the Centres are done by a full-time member of the academic staff at the host institution. • A coordinator or administrator assistant who will be responsible for the control of the technology and the administration of the contract on the CoE can be part of the Defence Related Industry.
