“TheFranks” • originated from the east of the Rhine • were originally a group of many Germanic tribes • used to invade Rome • later got permission to settle on Roman land from Emperor Julian in AD 358 • the land was between the rivers Scheldt and Meuse • the Frankish tribe that ruled the others was The Salian Franks
Clovis I • Famous Merovingian King • Son of Childeric I • Became king in AD 481 • Usually brutally kills his rivals • Saint Clotilda / Clotilde • She was a Catholic – although most of her surroundings were Arians • He defeated Syagrius who ruled northern Gaul in AD 486 • Syagrius was Aegidus’s son
Clovis I • He later defeated the Germanic Tribal Confederation of Alemanni in AD 496 and added a lot of land to his empire <<They actually fought Alemanni until it was all theirs in AD 502>> • Yet, a part of it was protected by the Ostrogoths .. • Saint Clotilda had convinced him into converting into being a Catholic too • He was baptized on Christmas Day in AD 496 • He created the first code of Roman Law ROMAN LAW
Clovis I • He was the first king of all Franks on record • He conquered all the Frankish kingdoms west to the River “Maas” • He made his capital Paris • He’d secured his bond with the Ostrogoths since his sister “Audofleda” was married to their king “Theoderic The Great” • He’d also gained support from the Armoricans (Alans, Gallo-Romans, Britons) which helped him with defeating the Visigoths’ kingdom • He might have died in AD 511
Theuderic I • He was the first son of Clovis I and an unknown woman that was not Saint Clotilde • He was born in AD 485 and ruled until he died • He’d received the city of “Reims” (AKA Metz) as his split when his father had died in AD 511 • He later got involved in the war between the Thuringian King “Hermanfrid” and his only living brother “Baderic” • He then joined his other 3 brothers in fighting Sigismund and Godomar – kings of burgundy – and they won • He then married “Suavegotha” who was Sigismund’s daughter
Theuderic I • He then helped his brother Chlodomer I fight and defeat Godomar and Chlodomer had died in the fight at Vezeronce • He also joined his other brother Clotaire I and his own son and attacked Thuringia as a revenge for his mother - whom nephew was killed by Hermanfrid - on “Hermanfrid” • They won and Clotaire I received “Radegund”- King Bertachar’s daughter ( King Bertachar was one of the late kings of Thuringia – he was also Hermanfrid’s late brother )
Theuderic I • Thuringia was conquered • He later makes a treaty with his other brother Childebert I • Not long after, he died ( AD 534 ) • He had left his kingdom to his son “Theudebert I” • And he also had a daugter named “Theodechild I” by the same mother – Suavegotha • Theodechild I later founded “The Abbey of St Pierre le Vif located at Sens”
Chlodomer I • also spelled as “Clodomer” or “Clodomir” • He was the second son of Clovis I – the first by Saint Clotilde and Clovis I • He was born in AD 495 • He’d received and ruled the city of “Orleans”(taken from Syagrius when his father had died in AD 511” • He married Gunthec and had 3 sons ( Theodebald, Gunthar, Clodoald ) • He’d also joined his other three brothers in fighting and defeating Sigismund
Chlodomer I • He was the one who held Sigismund captive for that fight • He was later forced to fight Sigismund’s brother Gondomar when he returned with an army that the four brothers didn’t expect • They defeated him anyway • On May 1st AD 524, Chlodomer had Sigismund and his two sons ( Gisald and Gondebaud ) assassinated • He died in his next expedition in the same year at Vezeronce • Gunthec was left a widow and later married Clotaire I ( the 4th of the 4 brothers )
Childebert I • He was the third of the four sons of Clovis I • His mother was Saint Clotilde • He was born at Reims in AD 496 • He’d received the city of “Paris” as his inheritance after his father’s death • He was a real family man • He loved going to war and joined his brothers in defeating Sigismund in AD 523 as well • In 524, Chlodomer I’s – his brother – children, he had joint his city with his brother’s “Chartres” and “Orleans”
Childebert I • He’d completely received cites “Arles” and “Marseilles” with the help of his brothers starting in AD 532 and ending with Clotaire I’s help in AD 537 • He also fought for his sister Chrotilda (wife of King Amalaric of the Visigoths) in AD 531 for she cailmedthat The Arian King of Hispania was mistreating her since she was a Catholic • But she died of unknown causes on the way back to Paris • Amalaric was later assassinated in Barcelona
ChildebertI • He took possession of Pamplona with Clotaire I helping him • They actually tried Zaragoza as well but they had to retreat • He bought back the tunic of Saint Vincent from this expedition • He then built the Monastery of Saint Vincent in Paris • He died on the 13th of December in AD 558 • He had two daughters named Chrodoberge I and Chrondensinde I This is Saint Vincent
Clotaire I • also spelled “Chlothar I” • He was the 4th / youngest son of Clovis by Saint Clotilde • He’d received the city of “Soissons” as his share after his father’s death in AD 511 • His first wife was “Guntheuc” who was the widow of his own late-brother Chlodomer I • He had then ordered for her all three of her sons with Chlodomer I to be killed ( sons were : Theodebald I, Gunthar I and Clodoald I ) • Actually, Clodoald I survived somehow
Clotaire I • In AD 532, he married his second wife “Radegund” she was the daughter of King Bertacharwhos brother Hermanfrid was defeated by Clotaire I and Theuderic I • He had made no children from his first two marriages • Radegund later died and was respected and worshiped too • He later made a successful marriage with Ingund for he had many children ( the number is uncertain but there are surely 3 sons and 1 daughter.. But there maybe more ) • His 4th wife was to “Aregund” a sister of his 3rd wife Ingund • He had a son by Aregund named “Chilperic I” • He 5th marriage was to “Chunsina” which they had a son “Chram” which became his enemy
Clotaire I • He’d obtained “Grenoble” “Die” and some other cities in the destruction of the Burgundy Kingdom in AD 534 • He’d obtained Theodebald I’s cities and teritories when he died in AD 555 ( Theodebald was his great nephew ) • He became sole king of the Franks in AD 558 when his Childebert I’s death • He’d shut his own son Chram up by locking him and his family in cottage and setting it on fire • He felt guilty and asked for forgiveness at the tomb of St Matin • He died later in the palace “Compiengne” • He ruled from AD 511 (when his father died) to AD 561
Theudebert I • He was the son of Theuderic I by Suavagotha • He was born in AD 500 and ruled from AD 533 to his death • He ruled Reims (AKA Metz) after his father • He’d defeated King Chlochilaich and his Danish army for his father in AD 516 • He had to fight both of his uncles Childebert I and Clotaire I in able to rule his father’s territories by himself • Childebert I later sided him and they were going to fight Clotaire I but then a storm hit them so it was peace • He was later invited to the Gothic war between Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and the Ostrogoths. • Emperor Justinian I gave him a lot of payment for being on their side but he saw the weak spot and took it as an opportunity to plunder from them too
Theudebert I • So the poor Byzantines had to fight both the Ostrogoths and the Franks • He also dared make his coins and currency with his face on them • He was first married to “Wisigard” who was the daughter of the King of the Lombards “Wacho” • He then married Deuteria and had a son • Wisigard died very soon after that • That son’s name was Theudebald I • Theudebert I died in his 14th year of ruling in the end of AD 547 or the beginning of AD 548
Clodoald I or Saint Cloud • He was one of the sons of Chlodomer I and Guntheuc • He was ordered for killing by Clotaire I, his own uncle after Clotaire had married his mother • Clodoald I was the only one of the three brothers that had managed to escape • But with that he had to cut off his hair – the symbol of Frankish royalty • He later became a Saint
Chilperic I • He was the son of Clotaire I by Queen Aregund • He was born in AD 539 • He’d received and ruled “Soissons” (AKA Neustria) “Amiens” ”Arras” ”Cambrai” ”Therouanne” ”Tournai” and “Boulogne” from AD 561 to AD 584 when he died • He was often at war with Sigebert • Once, Sigebert defeated him and marched to Soissons and defeated and imprisoned Chilperic I’s eldest son “Theudebert II” • But the war ended in AD 567 because of Charibert I’s death
Chilperic I • They also had another war where Guntram I shifted sides and Chliperic I lost. • Chilperic was first married to Audovera but repudiated her shortly afterwards • He’d taken a serving woman “Fredegund” as his concubine • He later dismisses her and marries his second official wife “Galswintha” – Brunhilda’s sister • But Galswintha was later found dead ( cause : strangulation ) • So he married Fredegund • In AD 575, Fredegund assassinated Sidebert I • In AD 578, he sent an army to fight the Breton ruler “Waroch” and won
Chilperic I • He had 8 children, four by Audovera, and four by Fredegund • He was also an artist of some sort • He even tried to change the Frankish alphabet • He worked on lessening the worse effects of the Salic Law on women too • He was assassinated by an unknown assassin in September AD 584
Guntram I • He was the third son of Clotaire I by Queen Ingund • He’d received and ruled the kingdom of “Burgundy” from AD 561 to AD 592 • He was the only brother of all that had “fraternal love” because he loved his sons and was kind of sad when one of them got killed • He made his capital “Orleans” • He had a son with his concubine “Veneranda” a slave, the son’s name was “Gundobad” • He then married “Marcatrude” daughter of Magnar
Guntram I • He later sent his son “Gundobad” to Orleans • Marcatrude was having a son at that time and got jealous so she poisoned Gundobad and he died • She lost her son after that and when Guntram found out about the poison, he dismissed her and she died shortly afterwards • His third marriage was to “Austerchild” also know as “Bobilla” • They had 2 sons named “Cloaire (II)” and “Chlodomer (II)” • Guntram spent the rest of his life as a Saint should be, rightful, yet merciful and caretaker for the sick and poor and he forgives a lot • In AD 577 his two children died and he adopted his nephew (son of Sigebert I) “Childebert II”
Chram I • He was one of the sons of Clotaire I by Queen Chunsina • He was captured and killed by his own father when he was in Burgundy • He was supposed to be burnt while in his cottage with his family but he got strangled first then was burnt
Charibert I • He was the second eldest son of Clotaire I and Queen Ingund • He was born in AD 517 • In AD 556 Clotaire I sent him and Gunthram I against their stepmother Queen Chunsina and their youngest stepbrother Chram • There was a thunderstorm and Chram tricked his brothers by lying that their father had died so the two went back to Burgundy
Charibert I • When his father died, he’d received Paris, Neustria, Aquitaine and Novempopulana with Paris as his capital • He had a daughter with his wife “Ingoberga” and her name was “Bertha” born in AD 539 • With his concubine “Merofleda” he had “Berteflede” and with Merofleda’s sister “Marcovefa” he had “Clothilde” • He also had his only son with “Theudechild” or “Theodogilda” but he died
Sigebert I • He was born in AD 535 • His father was Clotaire I and his mother Queen Ingund • He fought a lot of wars against Chilperic I his half brother • Sigebert I received and ruled Austrasia the northeastern territory • His original capital was at Reims but the raiding of the fierce Huns caused him to move it to Metz instead • In AD 567, he was married to his first wife “Brunhilda” daughter of the Visitgothic King Athanagild • They had a great and romantic marriage
Sigebert I • Chilperic I later married “Galswintha” a sister of “Brunhilda” but later got tired of her and ordered for her to be killed • Brunhilda was mad for such a thing and so Sigebert I went for revenge • In AD 573, he took from Chilperic I “Poitiers” and “Touraine” and was named king by Chilperic I’s subjects • Not long after, two assassins killed him, they worked for Fredegund • His son Childebert II succeeded him and Brunhilda quickly puts the two of them under Guntram I’s protection
Sigebert I • Guntram I later adopted Childebert II as his own son and heir • He and Brunhilda had two daughters too :” Ingund II” and “Chlothsind”
Theudebald I • He was the son of Theudebert I and Deuteria • He was born in AD 535 • He ruled Metz/Reims/Austrasia (as it has so many names) from AD 547 or 548 to AD 555 • He married “Waldrada” daughter of the Lombard king “Wacho” • She was a relative of one of his father’s wives • He later avoided direct confrontation – just like his father - with the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in AD 552 • He died in AD 555 and his kingdom was united with his great uncle “Clotaire I”
Clotaire II • He was the son of Chilperic I and Queen Fredegund • He was the King of “Neustria” from AD 579 and became King of All Franks in AD 613 to AD 629 • He became the King of Neustria when he was only about 13 years old • He had 3 wifes and 3 children • When his mother died in AD 597, he had to continue the feud for her and he did with the same level of violence • In AD 599 he had war with his nephews Theuderic II and Theudebert II
Clotaire II • They had defeated him • Later on he fought many wars with Theuderic II • He had invaded Theuderic II’s kingdom in AD 605 too • But their fighting stopped in AD 613 when Theuderic II died • Clotaire II later ordered for Brunhilda, “Sigebert II” – her grandson – and Sigebert II’s brother “Corbo” to be killed • He became the second King of All Franks after his grandfather Clotaire I was the first • In AD 615 he gave a lot of power for the nobles – too much • From that day on he kind of lost control over all the new laws that the nobles make which he can’t stop • He died in AD 629 and he gave his son Dagobert I the kingdom of Austrasia
Theuderic II • He was the son of Childebert II • He’d received Guntram I’s kingdom of “Burgundy” and ruled it and “Austrasia” when his father died • He had set his capital at “Orleans” • He ruled Burgundy from AD 595 to AD 613 and Austrasia from AD 612 to AD 613 • He also received Toulouse, Agen, Nantes, Angers, Saintes, Angouleme, Perigueux, Blois, Chartres and Le Mans which were cities
Theuderic II • In AD 596 Clotaire II and his mother Fredegund took “Paris” which was supposed to be kept in common • In AD 599 Brunhilda was forced out of Austrasia by Theudebert II – his brother - and she was later taken care of by Thederic II • She later became really influencial and cause the brothers to go at many wars • But that later stopped for a while when the two had to side against their cousin Clotaire II • It took them a while to defeat him
Sigebert II • He was the king of Austrasia after his father Theuderic II since the year of AD 613 • He died at a very young age since the mayor of the Austrasian palace sided with Clotaire II and they killed him, Brunhilda and his younger brother too
Childebert II • He was the king of “Austrasia” which included “Provence” from AD 575 to AD 595 when he died • He was the son of Sigebert I • And the adopted son of his own uncle Guntram • He was the heir of Guntram and he survived many attempts of killing by Fredegund who wished the Crown for her son Clotaire II • However, when Guntram died in AD 592, the kingdom was his
Theudebert II • He was born in AD 586 • He was the son of Childebert II and received and ruled “Austrasia” and the cities “Poitiers” “Tours” “Le Puyen-Velay” “Bordeaux” “Champagne” “Auvergne” “TransjuraneAlemanniaen-Velay” and “Chateaudun” • In AD 599, he had war with his brother “Theuderic II” • Theuderic II defeated him at Sens • They later allied against Clotaire II and defeated him • He was later attacked from Theuderic II and he stole “Alsace” from him • He and his son were assassinated in AD 612 • His daughter “Emma” married Eadbald of Kent
Dagobert I • He was the eldest son of Clotaire II and Queen Haldetrude • He was born in AD 575 • His father was forced to put him as king for the nobles • He was the King of Austrasia • He created the Duchy of Alsace (duchy – an area of land controlled by a duke/duchess) • He also ordered for Chilperic II to be killed sometime around AD 632 • In AD 634 he’d put his young son Sigebert III on the crown which pleased the nobles
Charibert II • A son of Clotaire and his other wife Queen Sichilde • He was briefly the king of Aquitaine (he only ruled for 4 years) • He ruled from AD 629 to his death in AD 632 • He was first represented by his uncle which Dagobert I – his half brother – had killed • But Dagobert I soon accepted him and didn’t stop him from stealing Aquitaine at all • In AD 631 he was accepted enough to be put as the Godfather of Sigebert III – Dagobert’s son • He and his son were killed in AD 632
Clovis II • He was the son of Dagobert I and was born in AD 637 • His mother was Queen Nanthild and she and been quite influential towards him • He ruled Neustria and Burgundy • His wife used to be an Aglo-Saxon aristrocrat sold into slavery and later given to him • Her name was “Balthild” and she made 3 successful sons with him • He died on the 27th of November in AD 657/8 and was buried in Saint Denic Basilica in Paris
Sigebert III • He was born in AD 630 • He was the son of Dagobert I and his concubine “Ragnetrude” and also the half brother of Clovis II • His wife was called Queen Chimnechild and they had a son named Dagobert II • When his father died, he ruled Austrasia independently • He quickly grew into an adult • He became the leader of his army at only 10 years old • He tried to add Thuringia to his kingdom but got defeated in AD 640 • The kingdom fell a while after that • He died in AD 660 • He also exiled his son Dagobert II to Ireland and created many hospitals and churches too
Clotaire III • He was eldest son of Clovis II and Queen Balthild • When his father died in AD 658, he succeeded him under the regency of his mother (regency – period of ruling) • He had put his brother Childeric II for the crown for the Austrasians and their pleading in AD 662 during the regency • He was mostly described as the first ‘do-nothing-king’ of the Merovingian dynasty and his last 4 years fits • He died in the Spring of AD 673 and was buried in Saint Denis Basillica • Theuderic III succeeded him
Childebert III (the adopted) • He was a son of the Mayor of the Palace in Austrasia named “Grimoald the Elder” • He was also the grandson of “Pepin of Landen” • He was later adopted by King Sigebert III and Queen Chimnechild • When his adopted father died, his father had ordered Sigebert III’s real son to be shorn of hair and then put his son as king of Austrasia • Grimoald, Childebert III and Ansegisel – married daughter of Pepin the Landen – where turned over later on and were executed some time from AD 657 to AD 661
Theuderic III • He was the king of Neustria (including Burgundy) • He was also the king of Austrasia from AD 679 until he died in AD 691 • He was the son of Clovis II and Queen Balthild • He was a ‘puppet’ • He was the king of all Franks in AD 679 • He married “Clotilda” daughter of Ansegisel and she was also called Saint Begga of Landen • He had many children and died in AD 691
Childeric II • He was the king of Austrasia from AD 662 • He was also the king of all Franks for the last two years of his life • He was the son of King Clovis II and his grandfather was King Dagobert I • In AD 675, he granted Alsace to Adalrich • He was killed and later buried at Saint-German-des-Pres
Other Kings • Clovis III – King of Austrasia AD 675-676 (died soon) • Dagobert II – King of Austrasia AD 676- 679 (also was a saint, his life was pretty much said because he was abandoned more than once but also kind of peaceful) • Clovis IV – King of All Franks AD 691-695 (when he was 9-13..he was really a puppet of “Pippin II” his uncle) • Childebert III – King of All Franks AD 695-711 (puppet of “Pippin of Heristal”) • Dagobert III – King of All Franks AD 711-715 (succeeded his father at age 12..most of the power was still with “Pippin of Heristal” but he died during Dagobert III’s heir) • Theuderic IV – King of All Franks AD 721-737 (he was pretty much contolled by “Charles Martel” mayor of the palace) • Clotaire IV – King of Austrasia AD 717-718 (puppet of “Charles Martel” the mayor of the palace; maybe not a Merovingian at all)
Chiperic II • He was the youngest son of King Childeric II and was the king of “Neustria” from AD 715 until he died • He later became the King of All Franks from AD 718 until he died as well • He was actually the last Merovingian to have used his actual power to do anything (without being a puppet or ordered that is) • He was raised and born as “Daniel” but later picked and changed his own name • He was first predicted to be the puppet of the mayor of the palace “Ragenfrid” but turned out not to be • He was a warrior and a fighter and self-confident as well • He was defeated by Charles Martel many times so he and his mayor fled • He died in AD 720 in Attigny
