Laws in the U.S. on Same-Sex Marriage There is no universal U.S. Law on Same-Sex Marriage. Every state has their own laws that may or may not recognize same-sex marriage. Recognized In: Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, and Washington. Civil Unions Available In: Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Colorado, and Wisconsin.
Civil Union vs. Marriage The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) does not recognize a Civil Union between two same-sex individuals in cases of immigration. Joint-taxes could not be filed because Civil Unions are recognized only by the states that allow them. The Federal Government does not recognize them as married individuals. Lastly, there is the matter of “Benefits”. Heterosexual individuals, when married, gain survivor benefits through social security, sick leave for an ailing partner, tax breaks, insurance breaks, and hospital visitation rights and decisions.
Why is there even an argument against Same-Sex Marriage? • Stereotypes. • Perverted, Hypersexual Individuals. • Give rise to Polygamy. • Religion. • Leviticus 20:13 • If a man also lie with mankind, as he lyethwith a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. • Ignorant Ideas. • “Destroys the Sanctity of Marriage”. • “Goal of Marriage”. • Off-Spring. • Lifestyle Choice. • Nature vs. Nurture.
What Can YOU Do? You can help the United States progress into the future and give these people the rights that they should already have, instead of remaining in the past with these false beliefs. A simple thing we can do is educate our future children the right way, to believe in equality in all, whether it be in Religion, Race, Gender, or Sexual Orientation. But, we can also band our voices together now so that the United States Federal Government can hear us. This isn’t a fight for Gay Rights. This is a fight for Human Rights, for Equality as a whole. By taking the time to contact Pat Quinn with words of encouragement, you can support him and his belief in Marriage Equality. Right now, as of April 10th 2013, Pat Quinn has announced that the votes to turn Same-Sex Civil Unions into Same-Sex Marriage is “very close” in the United States. With our continued support, the United States can continue to progress, one mind at a time until Same-Sex Marriage is recognized as a whole in the United States.
