  3. Causes: Civil Rights Act of 1964 Racial tensions and civil rights protests grew during the early 1960’s Alabama governor refused to desegregate state universities (remember Little Rock 9?) Pres. Kennedy demanded that Congress pass a civil rights law Kennedy was killed Pres. Johnson persuades Southern senators to pass bill Describe the main reason for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Effects: Civil Rights Act of 1964 • Prohibited discrimination because of race, color, religion, or national origin, and gender • Gave the federal government power to speed up desegregation • Banned discrimination in employment • Established Equal Employment Opportunity Commission • Banned discrimination in public places • Parks • Restaurants • Theatres What is the significance of the Civil Rights Act of 1964?

  6. 24th Amendment • Causes: • Poll taxes still required in 5 Southern states • Poor AA’s could not afford to pay • Effects: • 24th amendment- • Made poll taxes illegal • *extended the right to vote to millions of poor people • Describe the impact of the 24th Amendment

Causes: Voting Rights Act of 1965 • Southern states had passed laws to limit AA voting rights • 1964- Freedom Summer • Volunteers worked to register AA voters in Mississippi • Sparked racial violence and murder • 1965- Selma, Alabama • Protests and violence over voting rights • Pres. Johnson submits the Voting Rights Act to Congress

Effects: Voting Rights Act of 1965 • Eliminated literacy tests often used to disqualify African American voters • Allowed federal examiners to register voters who had been denied their rights • **Tripled the number of African Americans registered to vote in the South • How did literacy tests affect AA voters? • Summarize the impact of the voting rights act of 1965.
