GOAL Provide education and information for Church leaders to facilitate the Establishment of high performing auxiliary Boards within our local churches.
OBJECTIVES • Define leadership. • List leadership qualities. • Establish team development stages. • Match leadership style to stage of team development.
What is leadership? Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose and the character which inspires confidence. OR Leadership is influence. John C. Maxwell
LEADERSHIP ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES • JOSHUA 4 • First and foremost be spiritual. • Joshua was in constant contact with God and God exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel. You are in contact with God often. • JUDGES 4 • Have a heart. • This is a leader who has been given the • Leadership and guidance of the Holy Spirit to • Meet daily challenges. You are guided by God. • Barak was a leader guided by the Holy Spirit.
John 13 • Servant leader • A spiritual vision of leadership such as the one Jesus modeled rejects self-seeking, self-protection, self-promotion, and self- advancement. It embodies humility, generosity, sacrifice, respect for others, reverence, and responsibility.
TITUS 1 • Leaders should be Blameless Not overbearing Not quick tempered Not given to drunkenness Not violent Not pursuing dishonest gain Must be Hospitable One who loves what is good One who is self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined
You must be trustworthy, Trustworthiness is a balance of high competence and strong character. TRUST TRUSTWORTHINESS BALANCE OF THE TWO CREATE CHARACTER COMPETENCE A person with high character exhibits integrity, maturity and an Abundance Mentality (plenty for everybody, A person with high competence has knowledge and ability in a given area. TITUS 1
1TIMOTHY 3 • God wants leaders who are disciplined, seasoned and convicted in faith. • Leaders should be • Above reproach • Temperate • Self-controlled • Respectable • Hospitable • Able to teach • Not given to drunkenness • Not violent but gentle • Not a lover of money • Manage his own family • Must not be a recent convert • A good reputation • Not malicious talkers
JEREMIAH 36 • A leader must respond positively to • God’s will. Negative leadership can result in suffering and death. • Leaders who respond positively to God’s • will result in peace, unity, forgiveness, deliverance, healing, and abundant life.
DEUTERONOMY 31 • Good leaders learn to accept with gratitude the accomplishments of previous leaders. Joshua was not envious of the great deeds of Moses.
21 INDISPENSABLE QUALITIES OF A LEADER • 1. CHARACTER • The leader exhibits integrity, maturity and an abundance mentality. Followers do not trust leaders whose character they know to be flawed, and they will not continue following them. The key to success is character.
CHARISMA/OTHERMINDEDNESS • The ability to draw people to you. • You need to like people, love life, see good in people and give people hope. • Share yourself: wisdom, resources, and even special occasions • Stay away from the following: • Pride • Insecurity • Moodiness • Perfectionism • Cynicism
COMMITMENT • It is the enemy of resistance. It is the serious promise to press on, to get up, no matter how many times you are knocked down. • 4 kinds of people • 1. Cop-outs • 2. Holdouts • 3. Dropouts • 4.All outs
COMMUNICATION • The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. • It’s not just what you say but how you say it. • Simplicity is the key to effective communication. Be clear.
COMPETENCE • It’s the leader’s ability to say it, plan it and do it in such a way that others know that you know how—and know that they want to follow you. • CULTIVATE COMPETENCE • 1. Show up every day • 2. Keep improving. • 3.Follow through with excellence—quality. • 4. Accomplish more than expected—go the extra • mile. • 5. Inspire others.
COURAGE • It is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities… because it is the quality which guarantees all others. • Courage is not an absence of fear. • To improve courage: speak in front of an audience, face the music, do something daring.
RESPONSIBILITY • Success on any major scale requires you to accept responsibility. • The one quality that all successful people have is the ability to take on responsibility. • Responsible people • 1. Get the job done. • 2. They are willing to go the extra mile. • 3. They are driven by excellence. • 4. They produce regardless of the situation.
DISCERNMENT • Can be described as the ability to find the root of the matter. Discernment helps the leader see a partial picture filling in the missing pieces and finds the real heart. It relies on intuition as well as rational thought. Never relies on gut feeling alone, but involves your head to find the best options. • Enhance your problem solving. • Evaluate your options for maximum impact. • Follow your instinct.
FOCUS • The sharper it is, the sharper you are. • Focus time and energy 70% on strengths • Focus 25% on new things • Growth equals change • Don’t forget in leadership: if you are through growing, you’re through. • Focus 5% on areas of weakness- delegate your weaknesses. Stick to things you know.
GENEROSITY • Giving is the highest level of living. • Be grateful for whatever you have. • Put people first. • Don’t allow the desire for possessions to control you. • Regard money as a resource. • Develop the habit of giving. • Give something away. • Find someone to mentor.
INITIATIVE • 1. Leaders know what they want. • 2. They push themselves to act. • 3. They take more risks. • 4. They make more mistakes. • To improve • 1. Change your mind-set. • 2. Don’t wait for opportunity to knock. • 3. Take the next step.
LISTENING • The ear of the leader must ring with the voices of the people. A good leader encourages followers to tell him/her what he/she needs to know, not what he/she want to hear. • The Law of Connection is leaders touching hearts before they ask for a hand. Before you can touch a heart, you must know what’s in it. You learn by listening. • The purpose of listening is to connect and learn. • Start listening not only for words, but also feelings, meanings and undercurrents.
PASSION • No one can be successful unless you love • Your work. If you look at the lives of effective leaders you will find that they often don’t fit into a stereotypical mold. • More than 50% of all CEOs of Fortune 500 companies had C or C- averages in college. • Nearly 75% of all U.S. presidents were in the bottom half of their school classes. • 50% of all millionaire entrepreneurs never finished college. Passion makes it possible for people who might seem ordinary to achieve great things. • Passion increases your will power. • Passion is the first step to achievement. • Your desire determines your destiny. Weak desires bring weak results and small fires creates little heat. • Passion makes the impossible possible. A leader with great passion and few skills always outperforms a leader with great skills and no passion. • People nowadays don’t sing, don’t dance, and don’t even commit sin with much enthusiasm.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE • If you believe you can, you can. • 1. Your attitude is a choice. Don’t allow your good attitude to deteriorate. • 2. Your attitude determines your actions. • Attitude is the criterion for success. • 3. Your people are a mirror your attitude. Who you are is who you attract. • 4. Maintaining a good attitude is easier than regaining one.
PROBLEM SOLVING • You will face problems! • Good problem solving ability demonstrate 5 qualities: • 1. They anticipate problems. If you have leaders who will come only if they know there is a good road, you should not want them. • 2. They accept the truth. People respond to problems in these ways: They refuse to accept them; they accept them and then put up with them, or they accept them and try to make things better. Face up to the reality of any situation. • 3. They see the big picture. • 4.They handle one thing at a time. Richard Sioma has this advise: “Never try to solve all the problems at once-make them line up for you one-by-one. • 5. They don’t give up when you are in the valley. TO Improve: • 1. Look for trouble. • 2. Surround yourself with problem solvers. • 3. Develop a method and use TEACH • T ime-spent to discover the real issue. • E xposure-find out what others have done. • A ssistance-have your team study all angles. • C reativity-brainstorm multiple solution. • H it it-implement the best solution.
RELATIONSHIPS • If you get along, they will go along. • The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people. People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. • John C. Maxwell
SECURITY • You can’t lead people if you need people. • Insecure leaders have several common traits. • 1. They don’t provide security others. • 2. They take more from people than they give. • 3. They continually limit their best people. • 4. They continually limit the organization.
SELF-DISCIPLINE • If you want to become a leader for whom self-discipline is an asset • 1. Develop and follow your priorities • 2. Make a disciplined lifestyle your goal • 3. Challenge your excuses • 4. Remove rewards until the job is done • 5. Stay focused on results
SERVANTHOOD • To get ahead, put others first. The true leader serves. Serve people. • A true servant leader • 1. Puts others ahead of his own agenda • 2. Possesses the confidence to serve • 3. Initiate service to others • 4. Is not position-conscious • 5. Serve out of love • How you treat others is really a reflection of how we think about ourselves.
TEACHABILITY • To keep leading, keep learning. • A leader needs to continue to grow because your growth determines who you are, who your are determines who you attract: who you attract determines the success of your organization.
VISION • Vision is everything for a leader. • Vision leads the leader. • 1. Vision starts within • 2. Vision draws on your history • 3. Vision meets others needs • 4. Vision helps gather resources • Remember: A true valuable vision must have God in it. Only He knows your full capabilities.
