PROJECT ONE SRD264//: ARCHITECTURE 2B MUSIC ROOM incorporating the compositional techniques of… Rachmaninov and Prelude in C# minor ALEXANDRA FORDHAM
what’sit about? About the piece Prelude in C# minor… • The simplicity of the initial slow moving and at times melancholy piano part is interrupted by a lively, dramatic variation which through its contrasting dynamics creates a sense of turmoil. The piece then returns back to its beginnings and follows a pattern of repetition. • This is shown in the above diagram where liveliness breaks through the controlled piano performance of the beginning and end. • radix.net explains that the listener experiences not only a “stunning display of pianistic virtuosity but overwhelming emotional catharsis as well” ALEXANDRA FORDHAM
Design process thoughts and ideas Design Ideas • Although the piece repeats in a cyclic nature it still has a beginning and end. • Whilst the beginning is quite defined the ending is not so clear and fades off. • Design attempts to portray this, as does it the spirited piano part in the middle of the piece. “What I try to do, when writing down my music, is to make it say simply and directly what is in my heart when I am composing. Whether there is love, or bitterness, or sadness or religion, these feelings become part of my music and it becomes either beautiful or bitter or sad or religious” QUOTE Sergey Rachmaninov ALEXANDRA FORDHAM
