  2. Be honest, now … • What would most people like to change about their lives? • Today we study Paul’s explanation of how believers’ lives can be changed for the better. • We learn that we no longer have to be slaves to sin • Jesus is now our Master

  3. Listen for comments on baptism. Romans 6:3-7 (NIV) Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 If we have been united with him like this in his death,

  4. Listen for comments on baptism. we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin- 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

  5. Freed from Slavery • So how did Paul use the word “baptize” in this passage? • What does our believer’s baptism have to do with this use of the word? • It is the Holy Spirit who baptizes us into Christ’s death (and resurrection)  This is the true meaning of the “baptism of the Spirit”

  6. Freed from Slavery • Before a person is united to Christ, to what is he or she a slave? • Why should a Christian stop sinning even though he or she knows God has forgiven and will forgive those sins? • How does being united with Christ through His death change our relationship to sin?

  7. Freed from Slavery • What makes it possible for a person to live a new life? • Consider how our death to sin and being alive to Christ carries over to our resurrection when Jesus comes again … • How might anticipating this truth affect our daily lives?

  8. Think about it … • Tell us a time when you have you felt trapped? • What kinds of choices, behaviors, and thoughts tend to trap people today? • Listen for ways outof the traps in our lives.

  9. Listen for ways outof the traps in our lives. Romans 6:8-11 (NIV) Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  10. Spiritually Alive • After Christ died and was raised, why did neither sin nor death have any power over Him? • How will uniting with Christ in His death change the future of our lives? • Disciples of Jesus are dead to sin. Why, then, do we still struggle with sin?

  12. Listen for a change of attitude. Romans 6:12-14 (NIV) Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God,

  13. Listen for a change of attitude. as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

  14. Who We Are in Christ • What change in attitude and action toward God happens in a person who follows Christ? • Under whose control does a Christian live? • In what practical sense is sin no longer the master of a Christian even though he or she might still commit specific sins?

  15. Who We Are in Christ • What does the word “offer” mean here? • Let’s make a list of things we can offer God. • What actions and attitudes will demonstrate to people around me that I have committed myself in obedience to God?

  16. Application • Confess. • Give your sin to Christ—no matter how small you consider it. • Acknowledge that Christ is your Lord and Master, and choose to live in victory in Him.

  17. Application • Remove. • Evaluate your life for the things or relationships that pull you into sin. • Create a plan for removing them or their power over you.

  18. Application • Team up. • Partner with another believer and support each other in saying no to sin and yes to Jesus. • Encourage each other and remind each other that sin is no longer the master; Jesus is.
