The Educational Ideas: • Curriculum Continuity • The Gilbert Review • ECM Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Curriculum Continuity ‘It was noticeable that where primary and secondary colleagues engaged in joint planning of these units there were both continuity and a greater variety of activities so that pupils’ motivation was sustained after transfer’. (Galton et al, 2003)
What is it? • Knowing which topics have already been covered. • Knowing what skills and understandings have been established. • Knowing the pace and style of previous lessons in the subject. Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Most importantly: • Using the knowledge to launch pupils’ secondary education in a way that will reassure them, challenge them and take them forward rapidly. Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Ineffective transfer can result in: • Pupils revisiting topics they have already covered. On occasion, it can be illuminating to visit old territory and see it in a new light, but mostly, pupils find it dull. Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Ideas for Transition • Bridging units • Year 7 teacher visiting year 6 class • Year 6 teacher visiting year 7 class and visiting pupils • Transfer of work • Learning journals/diary Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Transfer of work • Where transition units are given high status and pupils’ work successfully transferred from primary to secondary schools, pupils: • Feel more confident and enthusiastic about their move • Like to show off their year 6 work • Feel that year 6 had some value • Can see their progress Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
When planning the unit, we need to think about: • Curriculum Continuity • Pedagogical continuity • Transfer of work • Consistency in levelling • Progression shown formatively as well as summatively • Planned visits to partner schools Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Progression • Engagement at KS3 is critical for progression. Where engagement declines, often in year 7 there are short and long term implications: Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
The short term implications are: • Lower attainment in KS3 • Limited or wrong choices for KS4 subjects and GCSE • Limited attainment at GCSE (and Key stage 5). Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
The Longer term implications are: • Limited job choices • Lack of flexibility in the work place • Increased likelihood of criminal offences Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
The Gilbert review Recommendations • Plans for all LAs to influence capital projects, for example, BSF • What kind of ICT Investment? • Site and environment • To facilitate exchange and collaboration within and between schools Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
The Gilbert Review • Key elements: • Personalised Teaching and Learning • Learner-centred and knowledge centred • Assessment centred. • Functional literacy and numeracy • Employer needs Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
The Gilbert ReviewNew Technologies • ‘Using new technologies to inform learning and teaching will be a priority…’ • ‘schools therefore need increasingly to respond to: far greater access to, and reliance on, technology as a means of conducting daily interactions…’ • ‘collaborative relationships which encourage and enable all pupils to participate and which develop pupils skills of working independently and in groups’ • ‘use technology both within and outside classrooms to enhance learning’ Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
The Gilbert ReviewTeaching and Learning • Using data and assessment • Match high quality teaching to pupil ability • Regular monitoring of progress and rapid responses • Active dialogue • Collaborative relationships • Open ended tasks on specific projects of inquiry • Developing attitude to life long learning Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Lower attaining pupils • Take into account prior learning • Use of appropriate materials • Securing levels and progress in speaking, listening, reading and writing • Show pupils their progress, reviewing targets, small steps, task based feedback • High order thinking skills and problem solving, cooperative thinking and learning • Study support and out of class learning Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Enjoy and AchieveWhen pupils are actively engaged they: • Have a longer concentration span • Complete work on time • Have fewer behavioural problems • Maintain a good attendance record • Make faster progress • Have higher self esteem • Work well with others Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Engagement relies on two key factors: • An appropriate learning climate • The use of a variety of teaching and learning strategies Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
Principles for creating engagement • Activating prior knowledge • Setting challenging targets • Cooperative group work • Metacognition • Modes of representing information • Scaffolds • Deep and surface learning Liz Dando SNS Consultant Project Manager
