Deponent Verbs • Deponent Verbs are a class of verbs in Latin that exist in the space between the Active and Passive voices. • What we mean by this is that verbs of this type usually have a reflexive or intransitive quality about them. Passive Deponent Active
Deponent Verbs • Because deponent verbs sometimes are intransitive or reflexive, they cannot be wholly Active. morior, morī, mortuus sum = to die --You cannot diesomeone.-- Passive Deponent Active
Deponent Verbs • Yet, some deponent verbs can take objects, albeit with a reflexive feel to it (i.e., “for my own good”). sequor, sequī, secūtus sum = to follow --You can follow someone (for your own good).-- Passive Deponent Active
Recognizing Deponent Verbs • Because deponent verbs exist between the Passive and Active voices and share some of the features of both, they exhibit these features in both their formation and their translation. • THE MAIN POINT ABOUT DEPONENTS IS…… They look passive, but translate active.
Recognizing Deponent Verbs • Deponents look passive and their principle parts reflect this: 1st conjugation: conor, conārī, conātus sum 2nd conjugation: fateor, fatērī, fassus sum 3rd conjugation: sequor, sequī, secūtus sum 3rd-io conjugation: morior, morī, mortuus sum 4th conjugation: experior, experīrī, expertus sum
