Required materials • 3-ring binder • 5 binder dividers • Lined paper • Pen (blue or black) and pencil • Students will be given textbooks, which they may be required to take home for homework . It is the students’ responsibility to bring their books to class every day. If a student loses his or her book, he or she will cover its cost for replacement.
OPTIONAL materials • HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: • Blank index cards for vocabulary • Additional resources • Dictionary, e.g. Lewis & Short, New College Latin Dictionary • Grammar: e.g. Wheelock’s

Assignments and grades • Formatives (sports analogy: practice) • designed as practice for the students and to give me feedback on their progress • formatives will not be graded • Summatives (sports analogy: the game) • given after a topic has been covered and designed to test what the student has learned • graded • Total points system (non-weighted)
Formatives • Homework, handouts, in-class activities, projects, etc. • Entered into CLARITY with an “F” header • Weight of ZERO—does NOT affect the grade • Typically graded 1, 2, 3, or 4 • 4 – Advanced Mastery: Student displays understanding of the material beyond expectations • 3 – Mastery: Student displays expected understanding of the material • 2 – Initial Mastery: Student has begun learning the material, but has not achieved the expected understanding • 1 – No Mastery: Student has very little or no understanding of the assessed material • 0 – Not Attempted
SummativES • Entered into CLARITY with an “S” header • 2-3 quizzes, each worth 20 points, will be given in each stage • Vocabulary, derivatives, grammar, culture • 1-2 tests, each worth 40 points, will be given at the end of each stage to test comprehensive knowledge. • Translation, reading comprehension • Projects and/or papers may be also assigned throughout the year
Summative Grading Scale A+ = 98 –100 A = 93 – 97 A- =90–92 B+ = 87 – 84 B = 83 – 86 B- =80–82 C+ = 77 – 79 C =73–76 C- =70–72 D+ = 67 – 69 D =63–66 D- =60–62 F =0–59
Make-Ups/Retakes • Retakes will be offered once per assessment • Students must have completed all homework that grading period to retake • Retakes are highly recommended for grades below 70% • All summative assessments must be made up or retaken within TWO WEEKS. • Tests & quizzes must be made up or retaken outside of class with my supervision (typically before or after school) It is the student’s responsibility to pick up & complete all work.
Academic Honesty • Expected of students in all coursework • No Internet translators! • Cheating/plagiarism = 0
