Location • The Statue was built in Peloponnesus which is modern day Greece • It was built around 432 BC • The whole statue is completely gone but, the temple is left with a few columns.
Purpose • The statue was designed by Libon of Elis. • Libon of Elis designed the statue to be a token for the king of the Gods, Zeus. • It was used as a religious shrine, where the competitors and other would often pray before the Olympic games would begin.
Uniqueness • The thing about the structure that is very fascinating was its size. The statue was around 40 feet. ( Twice the size of the Lincoln Memorial) • It took them 7 years to build the statue of Zeus. • The temple followed a design used on many large Grecian temples. It was similar to the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus.
Ancient Foresight • The Doric columns that were used in the building of the temple were and still used in modern architecture. • The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world.
