  2. Mise en scene – location/setting -The opening sequence begins in a dark, damp sewer. This represents isolation, neglect and loneliness which is characteristic of the thriller genre as they typically present society in a negative manner. Waste is also usually dumped in a sewer, and they are also not very nice places which people tend to try and forget about which foreshadows a disaster at some point in the film. There is little in there apart from the man and the dead girl. -The scene then switches from the dark sewer to a light and busy school corridor. School is often represented as a safe environment and a place of learning which forces the audience to question the events as they convey two opposing emotions. The school is an unexpected location however this is typical of the neo-noir genre. - All three scenes within the opening are set in urban locations. The third is set along a secluded road

  3. Mise en scene - props • The first notable prop in the opening scene is a close up of a man wearing glasses. The connotations that glasses have are ‘nerdy’ and also intelligent which already gives us a little insight into the personality of the character. He is also wearing brown leather shoes which could also propose that he is a bit of a nerd and also not very sporty. • Another important and key prop within the scene are a set of blue bracelets that the dead girl is wearing as they later connect the first two scenes. The bracelets suggest child like innocence and this notion is also contributed by their calm, neutral colour. They also inform the audience that it is the same girl which gives us a concept of past/present/future and also creates tension as we are eager to understand what has happened. • A note is also found in a locker in the second scene, that has been most likely left by the girl which evokes a sense of mystery and anonymity. • The sign post in the third scene could also have some significance as each direction represents the unpredictability of the events that may be later to occur. • Closing the scene is a black muscle car with tinted windows . Drug dealers or gangsters often own expensive cars such as these which hints at the type of people within. The connotations of black are evil and mysterious. • A cigarette is also thrown from the car which signifies rebellion and negativity.

  4. Mise en scene – lighting /colour • The first scene begins with low level lighting which evokes a sense of physical and metaphorical darkness. It also contributes to the mysterious element of the thriller genre and helps the audience to capture the essence of the film. • The second scene contrasts against the dark, gloomy atmosphere of the first as is light and clear. Because we realise due to the props involved in both scenes it has now gone back in time. It makes the audience question what has happened as it all seems well and happy in scene 2 (what went wrong?).

  5. Mise en scene – Costume and make-up • The make-up used in thrillers is generally naturalistic and unnoticeable.
