  2. 在歐洲茅草(Thatch)用來覆蓋屋頂至少可推算自新石器時代，這一傳統的茅草屋(Thatched Cottage)千百年來相傳一代又一代，自古以來，多數歐洲和英國大部分的農村，以及許多城鎮和村莊都以茅草作為屋頂的材料，19世紀中葉隨著農業擴展，英國的茅草屋數量達到高峰，直到19世紀末，由於工業興起，農村經濟衰退和農業人口減少，茅草屋的數目才逐漸減少。 目前在英國和愛爾蘭比任何其他歐洲國家還保留更多的茅草屋，大多數的茅草是以小麥與黑麥梗兩者混合，好的茅草屋頂可維持45-50年以上，有些茅草屋齡超過500年。過去30年來，英國的茅草屋已經變得更加流行，擁有一間茅草屋不再是代表貧窮，而是財富的象徵，茅草屋保有華麗而古典的傳統建築風格，加上現代建築材料的裝修，隱密在扶疏的花叢中，點綴幾分的優雅與神秘感，彷彿走入童話世界。有些經過改造的茅草屋用來經營民宿，成為歐美時尚最夯的旅遊度假勝地。
