The Parallels and Contrasts ofRomans 5:12-19 1. If the Holy Spirit has set up an unbreakable parallel, then we do well not to tamper with it. 2. The giving of Adam’s sin and guilt to his humanity is set up as an unbreakable parallel to the giving of Christ’s righteousness and grace to His humanity. 3. Therefore, imputation of sin/guilt and the imputation of righteousness/innocence are truths that cannot be tampered with.
Overview of Romans 5:12-19 Rom 5:12Paul begins explaining through what we have our reconciliation (c.f. Rom 5:11)—Paul never finishes his thought, the dependent clause stands alone. Rom 5:18-19 Paul restates his dependent clause from verse 12 and finishes his original thought and sets up the parallel between Adam’s Sin and Christ’s righteousness through which we have reconciliation/justification.

A New Translation: Romans 5:12, 18-19 Context: Verse11, ESV, “We also rejoice in God THROUGH our Lord Jesus Christ, THROUGH whom we have now received reconciliation.” 12 THROUGH this: just as through one man sin came into the world and through that sin death and thus death came into all humanity [in Adam]because all sinned--- 18 Therefore, just as through the act of trespass of one there is intoall humanity [in Adam]condemnation so also through the act of righteousness of one there isinto all humanity [in Christ]justification of life. 19 For, just as through the disobedience of one man many were constituted sinners, so also through the obedience of one manmany will be constituted righteous.
