  1. Objective: 8.EE.A.2 Evaluate square roots of small perfect squares 8.NS.A.2 Estimate the value of irrational expressions. For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations. 8/16/18  Good morning! For your bellringer, grab a sheet of chart paper and a marker for each team member.  You have 8 minutes to create a poster displaying the perfect squares and their roots from 1 to 225.  The best poster will be put on display.

  2. There will be a short quiz Tomorrow *Repeating decimals to fractions *Scatter plots *Perfect Squares and Roots *HW will not be taken for a grade this week.

  3. AGENDA *Recap of Squares and Roots *Approximating Square Roots-notes *Online Square Root Game

  4. VOCAB 7 is the square root of 49 7 squared is 49 3 squared is 9 The square root of 9 is 3 is 9

  5. Square Roots have 2 solutions...Whaaaaattt? Square numbers have two of the SAME factors. The square root of 36 could be 6 or -6. 6 x 6= 36 -6 x -6 = 36

  6. If there is no sign in front of the radical, list the positive root.

  7. If there is a +/- sign in front of the radical, list BOTH square roots.

  8. If there is a - sign in front of the radical, list the negative square root.

  9. Fractions: If there is a fraction under the radical, take the square root of the numerator AND the denominator

  10. What number can you square and get -16? Negative under the Square Root-NO SOLUTION

  11. Use cheez-its to make perfect squares But what if we CUT squares? Could we cut the pieces to make 2 cheez-its a square?

  12. Possible tries: thirds fourths tenths Which approximation comes closest?
