COURSE REQUESTS PROCESS 2017-2018 SOPHOMORES

  1. COURSE REQUESTS PROCESS 2017-2018SOPHOMORES • This year, you will be responsible for entering your course requests for next year directly into Power School (unlike last year when your counselor did it for you). • All course requests will be reviewed in your individual planning session with your counselor, which will happen sometime in March. • You will be asked to name 3 alternative courses when you meet with your counselor (in case of cancelled or overenrolled courses).

  2. REVIEW REQUIREMENTS & AVAILABLE COURSES • Graduation requirements are outlined on the handout you have received. Review the requirements, and how you are doing in completing them. • Investigate available courses in the 2017-18 Course Catalog, which is available on the School Counseling page of the THS website. You will not receive a paper copy of the catalog.

  3. When making your requests, keep in mind: • Your future goals (college, career), and which courses will best help you attain these goals. • Many courses have pre-requisites (either particular grades or previous classes). Be sure that you meet these before requesting a course. • Review the Add/Drop process.

  4. STEP ONE: Log-in to the Power School Portal using your portal username and password. If you do not have access to the Internet, please make an appointment with your counselor. Click on the CLASS REGISTRATION icon on the left of the screen.

  5. STEP TWO: A screen that looks like the one below will appear. The screen is specific to your class next year. PE 10, a required course for all sophomores, has already been entered. The GREEN check mark on the right side of the screen indicates that the selection has been made.

  6. STEP THREE: There will be a total of EIGHT rows in which you must make a selection. You must make one selection in each row. For those rows where you have choices, click on the pencil as in the example below.

  7. Next click on the box under the GREEN CHECK MARK to select the course in that area that you are requesting. The “Prerequisite Notes” will give you information that will assist you in your choices. When finished, click “OKAY” and move on to the next area.

  8. STEP FOUR: When you have picked one course in each area, the screen will notify you that you have made 8 requests. Click “SUBMIT”! You are then finished, and can log-out.

  9. UCONN ECE CLASSES • Students selecting the UCONN ECE course in Biology may choose to take the course for either one or two semesters. You are not required to take both semesters. There is a fee associated with taking the UCONN ECE classes. • For students who are not interested in earning UCONN credit, but who want the challenge of this course, you may select to take the course at the Honors level. There are no fees associated with Honors level courses. • Please talk with your counselor at your individual planning session about any questions you have about UCONN ECE classes.

  10. The CLASS REGISTRATION icon will be open from March 14th through March 26th. • The Class Registration icon will be closed March 26th. • Beginning March 27th, any changes to your course requests must be made when you meet with your counselors in your individual planning session.

  11. ADD/DROP PROCESS THINK CAREFULLY ABOUT YOUR REQUESTS – INCLUDING ALTERNATIVES!!!!!! Remember that after the last day of school for this year, you may NOT CHANGE your course requests, unless you meet one of the criteria noted in the Add/Drop Process. The Add/Drop Process is detailed on the back of your information sheet and on our webpage.

  12. TO REVIEW: • Use the 2017-2018 Course Catalog available on the School Counseling website to review requirements and find out more about available courses. • Make your requests in Power School between March 14 and March 24. • CHOOSE YOUR REQUESTS CAREFULLY….review the Add/Drop policy. • All requests will be reviewed in your individual planning conference with your counselor.
