Point #1: the physical, the social and the individual are interdependent.
This means that we are dependent upon nature and society for survival.
At the same time humans form and transform their environment.
Thus, materialism privileges the society over the individual, but is dependent upon embodied individuals to be enacted. “Guns don’t kill, people do.”
Televisions don’t “do” anything. • Must be turned on. • Programs must be created. • Viewers must choose whether/what to watch, etc. • Thus, the dynamic interaction between technology and social norms enables and limits what is communicated.
Point #2: Ideas are “real” only in their material expression.
Illustrations: • A lie: the world is flat. • A novel: the physical object only. • A government: the behaviors of the involved.
Dialectic = the tension among “what has been,” “what is” and “what could be.”
How can “cool” be “hot?” How can “bad” be “good?”
Point #3: Leadership tends to be used more for control than emergent creativity.
Leaders tend to privilege receiving over action and create subordinants more as “respondents” than “agents.” This limits opportunity for more democratic uses of leadership. Otherwise put: power is used more for control than participation.
Example: in 2004 the Secretary of Education labeled the National Education Association as a terrorist organization. This label was used because the NEA opposed federal education initiatives (no child left behind). The NEA is an organization of 400k public and private school teachers.
What is a “free marketplace of ideas?” Again, Deetz has told us that citizens have become consumers. One outcome of this is that democracy becomes popularity in the marketplace.

Public information, public interest, and cooperative citizen action receive little attention in a context of new products that promise personal freedom and exciting cultural experiences.

For example: how might the USA have a two-headed one party system? How does this political system “stage” nonissue campaigns?
Finally, as part of the economic, educated elite you will tend to become more powerful. I hope you do better than this guy.
One possibility is “give permission” for alternative narratives to gain voice.
When doing so you are leading in the direction of emergent social change(justice).
