What is feminism? • The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.
How has feminism evolved? • The word “feminism” came about in the U.S in 1910. • 1910 is when the feminist movement became stronger. • The Women's Liberation Movement, popular in the 1960s and '70s, came about when more women began entering colleges and the workforce after World War II.
How feminism relates to Jane Eyre? • The Victorian era was from 1830-1900 • In the Victorian era Jane Eyre was considered to be the most progressive novel of that time.
How feminism relates to Jane Eyre? • Jane never gave up on improving her situation in life. She worked very hard and learned as much as she possibly could to achieve independence, which was impossibly difficult in her time and station in life. • Jane Eyre is one of my most loved heroines in literature, because she is everything a woman should be: strong, independent and infinitely kind.
Textual Evidence • “Do you think I am an automaton? — a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!”
Textual Evidence • “I do not think, sir, you have any right to command me, merely because you are older than I, or because you have seen more of the world than I have; your claim to superiority depends on the use you have made of your time and experience.”
Feminism Today • Over the years, feminism has not died. There are many people who still participate in keeping the movement alive in order to make change. There are many famous people now who are great examples of feminists, including Hillary Clinton.
Hillary Clinton • Hillary Clinton currently serves in the Obama administration as the 67th Secretary of State. • She has a very strong and determined personality, and in that way, her and Jane Eyre are alike. • What would happen if Hillary Clinton and Jane Eyre could meet?
