3. Every book has a classification number more commonly known as a call number. In school libraries the call number for a book typically uses the Dewey Classification System and the first 3 letters of the author’s last name. The call number is the book address for locating the book on the shelf.

The Dewey Decimal Classification System is the most widely used library classification in the world. • Developed by Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey who changed his name to Melvil because he was so interested in simplified spelling. 6. Library of Congress Classification 21 Branches of Knowledge The 21 categories are labeled A-Z except I, O, W, X and Y are not used. These are further divided by adding one or two additional letters and a set of numbers. This system of letters and numbers is used by most academic libraries to assign a call number to materials. LC call numbers can begin with one, two, or three letters. The first represents one of the main 21 branches and the following represent the subdivisions. EX.: A represents General Works AC represents Collections.
