This presentation is for students in elementary school, K – 5th grades. The purpose of this presentation is to actively engage students in learning the Dewey Decimal System while looking for books related to subjects of interest.
What is the Dewey decimal system? Dewey Decimal System 000 - Generalities 100 - Philosophy & Psychology 200 - Religion 300 - Social sciences 400 - Language 500 - Natural sciences & Mathematics 600 - Technology 700 - The arts 800 - Literature & Rhetoric 900 - Geography & History The Dewey Decimal System is a system we use to classify books by grouping them in 10 categories.
Who Created the Dewey Decimal System? • Dr. Dewey was an educator at the age of 17 and invented the Dewey Decimal System at 21. • Melvin Dewey isone of the greatest librarians of all time. • Media centers and libraries still use the Dewey Decimal System. How Are non-fiction books placed in the media center? • Non-fiction books are shelved in the media center by their subject's category. • A call numberis a group of numbers and/or letters put together to tell you where in the libraryto find your book. • A call number is locatedat the bottom of the book on the spine. It helps you to find your books quicker.
Dewey Call Numbers • There is the call number that we use for nonfiction books and that is the Dewey Decimal Number.A Dewey call number always has three numbers to the left of the decimal. • To the right of the decimal, there is no limiton number.The more numbers you add to the right of the decimal,the more specific the subject is.
