African Urban Risk Analysis Network (AURAN) GOAL AND OBJECTIVES THE MAIN GOAL IS TO BRING INTERNATIONAL FOCUS TO THE REDUCTION OF DISASTER RISKS IN URBAN AREAS OF AFRICA THROUGH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN AFRICAN URBAN RISK ANALYSIS NETWORK (AURAN) AND THE IMPLEMENTATION OF EXAMPLE RISK REDUCTION PROGRAMMES . THE AURAN WEBSITE WWW.AURANAFRICA.ORG PROVIDES A PLATFORM FOR INSTITUTIONAL NETWORKING AND INFORMATION SHARING AMONGST AFRICAN UNIVERSITIES, NGOS AND CBOS ON THE SUBJECT OF URBAN RISK REDUCTION. THE PROJECT'S MAIN OBJECTIVES ARE TO: 1. IDENTIFY DISASTER RISK ACCUMULATION PROCESSES LINKED TO URBANISATION AND STRUCTURAL AND NON-STRUCTURAL WAYS TO REDUCE THIS RISK; 2. LOCATE THE UNDERSTANDING OF DISASTER RISK IN URBAN AREAS WITHIN THE CONTINUUM OF RISK FROM EVERYDAY HAZARDS TO DISASTERS AND THE LINKAGES BETWEEN THEM;

  3. AURAN (ctd) 3. IDENTIFY THE MAIN CONSTRAINTS TO DISASTER RISK REDUCTION IN URBAN AREAS; 4. INITIATE DISASTER RISK REDUCTION INITIATIVES IN THE SIX CITIES AND DEVELOP TOOLS THAT CAN BE APPLIED IN OTHER CITIES AND VULNERABLE NEIGHBOURHOODS TO IDENTIFY, AND 5. ACT ON DISASTER RISK REDUCTION; CATALYSE AND SUPPORT INTEREST IN THIS TOPIC IN URBAN AREAS ALL OVER AFRICA. ACTIVITIES ARE IN ACCRA, ALGIERS, CAPE TOWN, DAR ES SALAAM, NAIROBI AND SAINT LOUIS. GHANA:FIELD ASSESSMENT SURVEY FOR ACCRA IN VIEW OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DRR STRATEGY. ALGIERS: SEISMIC VULNERABILITY MAPPING OF BUILDINGS IN SELECTED PARTS OF THE CITY OF ALGIERS. SAINT LOUIS: AWARENESS RAISING FLOOD PRONE DISTRICTS OF AND HOUSEHOLD SURVEYS. DAR ES SALAM: CASE STUDIES OF 3 SETTLEMENTS ON HEALTH RISKS. CAPE TOWN: DEVELOPMENT DATABASE, CALLED MANDISA, TO TRACK CHANGING TRENDS IN DISASTERS, PARTICULARLY FIRE INCIDENTS IN INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS. NAIROBI: RESEARCH ON ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND IS DEVELOPING STRATEGIES TO REDUCE THEM.

  5. ACTIVITIESTHE PROJECT STARTED IN SEPTEMBER 2004 AND THE CURRENT PROJECT PHASE TO ENDED IN NOVEMBER 2006 AT THE AURAN WORKSHOP IN CAPE TOWN ON 7-9 MARCH 2006. A POSSIBLE FOLLOW UP PHASE INVOLVING NEW PROJECT PARTNERS WAS DISCUSSED.BENEFITS:THROUGH THE AURAN PROJECT, THE NETWORK MEMBERS AIM TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN A VIRTUAL AFRICAN NETWORK TO ALLOW DISASTER RISK REDUCTION PRACTITIONERS TO ACCESS COMMON RESOURCES AND EXCHANGE DIALOGUE ON CRITICAL ISSUES IN THE FIELD. THE AURAN WEBSITE WWW.AURANAFRICA.ORG PROVIDES A PLATFORM FOR INSTITUTIONAL NETWORKING AND INFORMATION SHARING AMONGST AFRICAN UNIVERSITIES, NGOS AND CBOS ON THE SUBJECT OF URBAN RISK REDUCTION.

Introducing PeriPeri U • AIMS AT INCREMENTALLY BUILDING SUSTAINABLE ‘MULTI-TASKING’ CAPABILITIES IN DISASTER RISK AND VULNERABILITY REDUCTION IN UP TO 8 SELECTED INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING IN AFRICA FROM • IT SEEKS TO BUILD ON LOCAL ENERGIES AND COMMITMENTS TO BUILD CONTEXT-SPECIFIC CAPABILITIES IN: • FORMAL EDUCATION, • SHORT COURSE TRAINING, • LOCAL RESEARCH • RISK AND VULNERABILITY REDUCTION POLICY ADVOCACY.

Potential Areas of Collaboration • STRENGTHEN COLLABORATION BETWEEN UNIVERSITIES • EXPLORE INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES WITH UNIVERSITY GRADUATES IN NGOS – ALSO, NGOS SEEK ACCESS TO A DATA BASE OF SKILLED CONSULTANTS IN DRR AND HUMANITARIAN ACTION • EXPLORE OPPORTUNITIES TO BETTER INTEGRATE ‘SCIENCE’ WITH APPLIED PARTICIPATORY DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE IN ACTUAL FIELD SETTINGS. • EXPLORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPERIENCED NGO PERSONNEL TO TEACH-IN TO UNIVERSITY PROGRAMMES AS VISITING SCHOLARS OR RESEARCHER/PRACTITIONERS. • ENCOURAGE NGO & UNIVERSITY PROGRAMMES TO CONSULT IN DEVELOPING CURRICULA RELATED TO DRR/HUMANITARIAN ACTION

Consultation Meeting Objectives • THE CAPE TOWN CONSULTATION ACHIEVED THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: • CLARIFIED THE ROLE THAT PHREE-WAY PLAYS IN THE CONTEXT OF RELATED CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES UNDERWAY GLOBALLY, AND WITH SPECIFIC EMPHASIS ON HUMANITARIAN AND RISK REDUCTION ACTION-LEARNING PRIORITIES IN AFRICA. • REVIEWED, INITIATE AND ADAPT ACTION-LEARNING PROJECTS RELATED TO HUMAN CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT, COMMUNITY RISK REDUCTION, INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND STANDARDS/ACCOUNTABILITY. TO SHARE AND FURTHER DEVELOPED ROBUST APPROACHES TO PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION AND CONTEXTSPECIFIC CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT RELATED TO HUMANITARIAN ACTION AND RISK REDUCTION.
