United Nations • Founded in 1945, replacing the League of Nations • Goals to have countries working together in regards to international law, economics, progress as a society, human rights, world peace, security, and preventing wars internationally • 192 Members, out of 195 countries (include Vatican City and Kosovo) 98.4% of countries • Divided into five sections, each dealing with a different area -The General Assembly -The Security Council -The Economic and Social Council -The Secretariat -The International Court of Justice • Run the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organization (WHO) • Six official languages: English, Chinese, French, Arabic, Russian and Spanish
Commonwealth of Nations • 53 countries and sovereign states • Most were once a British Colony • All countries have equal status • Commonwealth, some of which include world peace, fair trade, democracy and human rights. • These nations compete in the Commonwealth Games • Queen Elizabeth II is head of the Commonwealth
Commonwealth Realms • Sovereign States whose monarch is Elizabeth II • Combined these 16 sovereign states have a population of 131 million • As in the Commonwealth of Nations each state is considered equal • Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, United Kingdom
Group of Eight • These nations are in the northern hemisphere • Its members are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. • The EU is represented, but cannot host summits • Out of the 9 countries that export the most products, 7 are in the G8 • Out of the top 7 countries by value of their stock exchange, 5 are in G8 • Of the 3 largest oil producers, 2 are in the G8 (USA and Russia) • Canada is included in all of these statistics (except for oil production)
G8 + 5 • Same members as the G8, plus five new countries with growing economies • Mexico, South Africa, China, India and Brazil
La Francophonie • Organization of countries with that are predominantly French-speaking or have a large minority of people who speck French • “Francophonie” means a community of French-speaking people • It has 56 members and 14 observers • The members do not have to be countries, ex. Quebec and New Brunswick are represented separately • Some members include Belgium, Burkina Faso, Congo, Croatia, Egypt, Ghana, Haiti, Madagascar, Monaco, Ukraine
Organization of American States • Headquarters are in Washington, DC • Founded on May 5th 1948 • 35 countries in either South or North American • Canada chose not to join the OAS when it became independent from Great Britain. Canada became an Observer in 1972 and a full member in 1990. • In 2004-2005 Canada contributed $9.4 million to the OAS, which made up 12.36% of the OAS’ budget. • Canada was very involved in the formation of the Unit for the Protection of Democracy
Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development • 30 Members, who all believe in representative democracy and a free-market economy • 27 of the members are considered “high income” countries • Founded in 1948, originally known as the “Organization for European Economic Co-operation” • Canada was one of the founding members • From 1996-2006 the Secretary General for the Organization was Don Johnston, who was Canadian
North American Free Trade Agreement • Three members; United States, Mexico and Canada • The agreement was signed on December 8th, 1993 by Bill Clinton, Carlos Salinas de Gortari and Brian Mulroney • NAFTA is considered one of the most powerful agreement made • There have been disputed between Canada and the United States about the agreement, one of these being about softwood lumber. What happened was the United States placed a 27% duty on the import of Canadian softwood lumber. • An American couple, Elaine and Marvin Gottlieb claimed that American investors lost over $5 billion in 2006 when the Conservative Government began taxing income trusts that were invested in the energy projects. NAFTA regulations state that no country can target citizens of another NAFTA country when introducing new laws.
World Trade Organization • Founded on January 1st, 1995 • Its goal is to monitor all international trade, and create new regulations to control trade between countries • It is replacing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, from 1947 • 153 Members, which account for more that 95% of international trade • Members do not have to be a country, but must have full control over their import and export trade • There are 28 observers • They WTO meets once every two years, and has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation • 21 Members, all on the Pacific Ocean • When combined, the member countries account for 41% of the worlds population and 49% of trade • When they meet at their annual summit they talk about the economy, trade, investments and international cooperation • Each year a different country hosts the summit, and the leaders are outfitted in that countries traditional costume • The founding members are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, United States, Republic of China, Hong Kong, People Republic of China, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Chile, Peru, Russia, Vietnam • From November 24th-25th, in 1997, the annual summit was held in Vancouver, where the leaders were dressed in leather jackets
