SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS SCHOOL INSPECTORATE IASI TEACHER TRAINING CENTRE IASI Grundtvig “SECURE INTERNET & SECUREGENERATIONS’’ SEIN- SEGE 15 - 18 April – 2010 Project meeting Romania- Iasi
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS As a result of the study presented previously we elaborated a guideline for parents which will facilitate the understanding of each child’s personality, in order to avoid any kind of danger which could show up in the children’s lives. We also relied on the need for training expressed by teachers and parents during the research conducted by the Teacher Training Centre Iasi.
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • Why counseling parents? The school-family partnership is a significant resource for setting-down the conditions necessary to ensure successful outcomes of school and pre-school students, the development of children’s personality and their social insertion.
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • The children who spend more than five hours in front of the computer, face the risk of becoming weight-challenged • An inappropriate position in front of the computer, for several hours, may affect the child’s posture • The screen may affect the sight. • They become selfish because they spend a lot of time on PC • Low social skills
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • They become quiet and lonely people • They become apathetic and depressed • They become unsociable and live in a virtual world where they can be whoever they want to be • Web searching leads to waste of time • The following risks may arise: address disclosure, the risk of being contacted by pedophiles, thieves and sex on the Internet • Fatigue • Bad school results
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS PARENT’S ROLE IN THE CREATION OF THE CHILD’S WELFARE • The parent is the first and the best counselor of the child. He/she should contribute most to the creation of a child’s well-being. But what does “well-being” mean? • The professional literature presents the following components of the well-being and their number is also the number of targets to be achieved by the parent-child relationship:
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • SELF ACCEPTANCE – seen as the positive attitude of an individual with regard to himself/herself, the acceptance of personal qualities and defects, positive perception of past experiences and of the future. This component grounds on an accurate self-image and high self-esteem. • POSITIVE RELATIONS WITH THE OTHERS like trusting people, social skills, the need for affection, and for giving love, empathy, open mind and warm attitude towards others.
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • AUTONOMY, determination, independence, resistance to group pressures and self-assessment using personal and social standards, interest in the experiences and assessments of the others and the capacity to live on his/her own. • CONTROL: the feeling of competence and personal assessment, control of tasks, creation of opportunities for the enhancement of personal needs and resources, the capacity to provide options in compliance with the personal values.
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • SENSE OF LIFE AND GOALS: the child should be directed towards average and long-term goals grounded on positive past experiences, on present happiness and the relevance of the future. Thus, the child believes that it is worthy to get involved and he/she will be curious about the future. • PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: open to new experiences, enhancement of personal potential, personal thinking, the perception of positive personal changes, efficiency, flexibility, creativity, the need for challenges and the rejection of routine.
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS Principles acting almost as axioms in the parent-child relationship: • Communicate efficiently with your child! Teach him/her to communicate correctly! Be aware of the role of communication in the formation of beliefs! • Listen to him/her so that he/she will listen to you! Develop the active listening skills of your child! • Show empathy! Make your child feel empathy too!
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • Be assertive! Make your children be assertive too! • Help them to know themselves and to create an accurate self-image! • Help them make the right decisions! Support them when they decide what is good for them! Make together a list of important things! • Settle conflicts in due time! Teach the child how to solve the conflicts with the others!
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • Help the children to resist the temptations like smoking, drinking, drug consumption, sex etc. Explain them that computer addiction leads to other undesired behaviors! • Help them how to get a good time management! • Work as a team (together)! Teach them that teamwork is very important! Help them in any difficult situation! Don’t forget that you should do this only when they ask for your help!
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS Proposals and Possible Solutions A complete solution for the protection of children during the use of the Internet and to control their activity on the computer and on the Internet is a software of parental control. Parental control software is a complex program used for the control of the children’s access to the computer and to the Internet and it has the following functions:
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • Internet navigation filtering and control • Restricts the access to certain websites based on a predefined list of restricted addresses • Allows content analysis and restricts the access to certain pages based on a predefined list of restricted words • Allows the access only to certain websites, based on a predefined list of accepted addresses
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS 2. User and computer control and Internet access control • Limits the time spent by the children on the computer and on the Internet, by establishing hourly intervals when the child may access these facilities • Limits the types of programs and files that may be downloaded and installed on the computer
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS • Restricts the access to the personal or work information stored on the computer (for example: documents, personal photos) by restricting the access to certain parts of the files or disk partitions • Limits or even restricts the use of certain programs by children (messenger, file sharing, programs used by the parents) • Limits or restricts the access to the computer settings
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS 3. Monitoring the use of the computer and of the Internet • Displays the list of the websites accessed by the child, in order to allow the parents to check it • Draft reports on the visited websites, used programs, time elapsed, accessed/ created/ deleted files or even printscreens revealing the children activity on the computer or on the Internet • Send to the parents’ e-mail periodical reports on the children’s activity on the computer.
SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS Conclusions Within the SEIN- SEGE project, besides the course SECURE INTERNET & SECURE GENERATIONS– tips for parents, we also intend to conduct the following courses for parents: • DESIGN OF THE SCHOOL – FAMILY PARTNERSHIP • AXIOMS OF PARENTS’ COUNSELLING • We shall provide PC user’s courses for parents.
