State-dependent Memory

State-dependent Memory. State-dependent memory means that memory performance is best if the state at encoding is identical to the state at retrieval . This phenomenon has been shown in both animals and humans, using different substances, such as alcohol ( Goodwin et al., 1969 ).

  1. State-dependent Memory State-dependent memory means that memory performance is best if the state at encoding is identical to the state at retrieval. This phenomenon has been shown in both animals and humans, using different substances, such as alcohol (Goodwin et al., 1969). There have been discussions whether mood states can cause mood-state dependent memory (Bower, 1981). A related phenomenon is context-dependent memory: Not only internal states, but also the external context may be critical for memory. Contributor © POSbase 2003
