Race to the Top: Getting Denver’s Students back on Track A Presentation by the Donnell-Kay Foundation to the DPS School BoardMay 14, 2009
Increasing DPS Graduates • Early Intervention • Keep students on track to graduation • Recuperation • Get off-track students back on-track • Recovery • Get out-of-school youth back in school
Does DPS Offer Adequate Supply? • 2006-2007 numbers indicate a high need • 3,700 dropouts annually • 7,800 students off-track based on age and number of credits • 3,000 9th grade students received three or more F’s in one semester • Need additional district data to determine current numbers • Seriously off-track students + current dropouts = Total Demand
What Can We Learn From Elsewhere? • Cities making great strides include Philadelphia and New York City • Examples of successful non-traditional school models with possibilities for replication in Denver:
Next Steps • Work closely with DPS Staff and Board to complete analysis of key questions and identify strategies for increasing Denver’s recuperative and recovery capacity • Contact: Kim Knous-Dolan Reyna Perez-Oquendo 720.932.1544 ext. 104 720.932.1544 ext.103 kknousdolan@dkfoundation.orgrperez@dkfoundation.org
