  8. A Travelers Code? Traveler's Code for Traveling Responsibly: Cultural Understanding: • Travel with an open mind. Cultivate the habit of listening and observing. • Reflect daily on your experiences and keep a journal. • Prepare—learn the geography, culture, history, beliefs, some local language, and know how to be a good guest in the country or culture.

  9. A Travelers Code? Social Impacts: • Support the local economy by using locally-owned restaurants and hotels. Buy local products made by locals from renewable resources. • Don't make extravagant display of wealth; don't encourage children to beg. • Get permission before photographing people, homes, and other sites of local importance.

  10. A Travelers Code? Environmental Impacts: • Stay on trails. • Pack it in, pack it out, and assure proper disposal of human waste. • Don't buy products made from endangered animals or plants. Compiled by Partners in Responsible Tourism—March, 1995 available online at www.pirt.org/travelcode.htmlla.sdrive/

  11. What is your traveler’s code? • Create a traveler’s code poster with your partner – must have at least 10 • Code = set of rules or guidelines • Remember: • Who is your target audience? • What issue are you addressing: cultural, social or environmental? • How will you use language to influence your audience?

  12. Debriefing / Evaluation • Which points on the code do you think are most important? • How have your own experiences confirmed or challenged any of these items? • Are there items you would like to see added to the code for tourists? • What underlying values are present in the code?
