  1. Virtual Doctor Visits Presented by Stefanie Patrick

  2. Objectives • Describe virtual doctor visits • Discuss payment for virtual doctor visits • Describe hardware/software utilized in virtual doctor visits • Usability of software • Describe an information system • Discuss advantages/disadvantages • Ethical/Legal Issues • Informatics Competencies/ Functions and Responsibilities of the Informatics Nurse

  3. What are Virtual Doctor Visits • Doctor-patient interactions through a Web-based portal (Eads, 2007) • E-mail, chatting, or video-conferencing between doctor and patient • Typically, patient pays a set fee or some insurance companies will reimburse (Robeznieks, 2007)

  4. Hardware • Computers are main hardware utilized in virtual doctor visits • I phone

  5. A computer such as a desktop computer or laptop is used for virtual office visits. • Some utilize newer technology like I phones and handheld devices to access the software needed to conduct virtual office visits via email and chatting as well.

  6. Software • multi user video conferencing system with white board system • Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) certified - web based electronic medical records • practice management solutions • Personal Health Records (PHR) • direct links to pharmacies, lab tests, results and technical support(2009)

  7. EMR/PHR allows physicians to analyze and amend patient’s medical records securely over the internet and allows patients to view their medical records at any given time or place (Morgan, 2009)

  8. Usability Usability is one of the reasons for slow adoption rates (HIMSS EHR Usability Task Force, 2009) It has been said that communication skills training should be considered when promoting EMR adoption for medical personnel (April 2010)

  9. Information System e-Telmed offers doctors and clinics all the hardware, software, and equipment needed to begin to offer virtual doctor visits. (2009)

  10. Clinical Information System (IS) • Physicians, pharmacists, educators, and patients utilize this IS • Data standards are top rated level 5 and allows HL7 integration • Provides EMR, video-conferencing, PHR, links to pharmacies, lab tests, results, and technical support • Configuration is web-based

  11. Advantages • Convenience for patient and doctor • Lower costs • Lower hospitalization rates

  12. Disadvantages • Lack of personal touch • Could something be missed?

  13. Ethical and Legal Issues • A legal issue involved is where the physician practices vs. where he/she is licensed. (Robeznieks, 2007) • Ethically, are patients getting the care they need?

  14. Informatics Competencies/ Functions and Responsibilities of the Informatics Nurse • The nursing informaticist does not have a role in virtual doctor visits.

  15. Why Virtual Doctor Visits? Convenience Cheaper Medical record in one place for multiple clinicians e-Telmed
