Linkages – Clean Energy, Green, and Economic Development • For 25 years link recognized between energy efficiency and economic development – Osage IA. • DOE study in 1990s reinforces link. • Energy efficiency $ stay in community- higher economic multipliers • Benefits to energy efficiency users • Increased activity as a result of reduced energy spending • Job creation for providers • Recognized in a Clean Energy Roadmap for the Greater Fresno Area. • A basis/rationale for Federal stimulus funding. • ACEEE stresses energy efficiency not about ratcheting down economy, but is about using innovation, productive technologies, and new approaches.
Current Situation and a Look Forward • Short term/long term impacts of $42 billion in ARRA funding for clean energy being assessed. • Strong world market for clean/green estimated as high as $2 trillion by 2020 by HSBC Global Research. • 2010 CA Regional Progress Report identifies 15 core elements of green economy, tremendous growth since 1990s- 50% growth in the SJ V. • Energy efficiency should be a prime focus in future economic development.
