  1. “Battling Envy” Psalm 37; Psalm 73; John 21 January 3, 2010

  2. What is Envy? A feeling of discontent and resentment aroused by another’s desirable possessions or qualities, accompanied by a strong desire to have them for oneself.

  3. I. Don’t Envy (vv.1-2) “Do not fret because of evildoers, Be not envious toward wrongdoers.” (v. 1) PSALM 37 Two Negative Commands: Don’t Fret, Don’t Envy. Why? “For they will wither quickly like the grass and fade like the green herb.” (v.2)

  4. II. Instead…Trust in the Lord (vv. 3-7) “Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (vv. 3-4) PSALM 37

  5. PSALM 37 II. Instead…Trust in the Lord (vv. 3-7) “Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light And your judgment as the noonday. Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. (vv. 5-7)

  6. PSALM 37 III. Further Reasons for Avoiding Envy (vv.8-11) “Cease from anger and forsake wrath; Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.” (v.8)

  7. PSALM 37 III. Further Reasons for Avoiding Envy “For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land. Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there. But the humble will inherit the land and will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.” (vv. 9-11)

  8. PSALM 73 “Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart! But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling, My steps had almost slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant As I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” (vv.1-3)

  9. PSALM 73 “Whom have I in heaven but You?         And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail,         But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (vv.25-26)

  10. LIFE LESSONS • The ultimate good and goal in life • is not prosperity, nor the absence of pain… • but the nearness of God. Psalm 73:27-28 For, behold, those who are far from You will perish; You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to You. But as for me, the nearness of God is my good;I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, That I may tell of all Your works. (2) It’s the long run and the big picture that counts when living for God.

  11. LIFE LESSONS (3) Trust in God… and wait on His perfect timing in your life. “Who has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for him?” --Isaiah 64:4 (4) Our hope is found in fellowship with Him.

  12. PSALM 73 “12Behold, these are the wicked;         And always at ease, they have increased in wealth. 13Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure         And washed my hands in innocence; 16When I pondered to understand this,         It was troublesome in my sight

  13. PSALM 73 17Until I came into the sanctuary of God…

  14. PSALM 73 “Whom have I in heaven but You?         And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. (v.25) My flesh and my heart may fail,         But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (v. 26)

  15. We can focus on Him by following the four commands that we saw in Psalm 37:3-7 • “Trust in the Lord” (v.3) • Depend exclusively on Him. • “Delight yourself in the Lord” (v.4) • Find your satisfaction in God. • “Commit your way to the Lord” (v.5) • Roll it all over onto Him. • “Rest in the Lord...wait patiently for Him” (v. 7) • Be still before the Lord. • Don’t take matters into your own hands.

  16. John 21 19Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God and when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me!”

  17. John 21 20Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them… 21So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?”

  18. John 21 22Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!”

  19. “To love is to stop comparing.”

  20. John 21:19 and when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me!” John 21:22 Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!”
