Common cold and work stressorsgain in importance in workplaces A PARTICULAR RELATION The common cold is important in the workplace because, its high incidence causes significant levels of sickness absence or impaired work performance Psychological stress occurring as a result of work-related factors is a widely reported workplace phenomenon with significant economic implications. How are theirrelated in the occupationalcontext?

DEFINITION AND KEY WORDS Work-related stress Is a pattern of reactions (physiological, emotional and cognitive) that occurs when workers are presented with work demands that are not matched to their knowledge, skills or abilities, and which challenge their ability to cope. Common cold Is a viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory system which affects primarily the nose. Symptoms include a cough, sore throat, runny nose, and fever which usually resolve in seven to ten days, with some symptoms lasting up to three weeks

The relation between work stressors and common cold HOW ARE THEY RELATED IN THE OCCUPATIONAL CONTEXT ? 1 ) There is a gender difference: the reported experience of common cold symptoms in males was significantly associated with previously reporting high job demands, the lack of job control and inadequate social support. It’s not the same in female. WHY ? • The males role of primary wage-earners • Males are more likely to “overrate” common cold symptoms

  8. The relation between work stressors and common cold CONCLUSION Work-related stress is a potential risk factor for the common cold, particularly in male workers and in those who experiencing work stress in job demand.
