  3. Essays • Grab the Reader • Re-adjust and Re-use your Scholarship Essay • Always Surprise • Follow the Essay Instructions • Stay Focused on the Scholarship Essay Topic

  4. Essay’s cont. • Have a Point • Check your Essay for Spelling Errors • Avoid Contractions, Such as “Can’t and Don’t” • Care About what You are Writing • Avoid Redundant Conclusions

  5. Letters of Recommendation • Fill out form to hand to teacher • If it is part of an electronic application, ask the teacher BEFORE providing their email address to an online recommendation form.

  6. College • Apply ONLINE NOW!!!! • Plan A, B, and C • Getting your application in EARLY is a BIG deal! • Be on their list for scholarships! • The counselor recommendation will come with your e-transcript…

  7. Common Application/UW System • www.commonapp.org • Apply with many colleges with one form • Pay application fee for each school you apply to • Send transcript through Parchment • https://apply.wisconsin.edu/ • One application but need to pay fees for different campuses.

FAFSA: A “Must Do”! • www.fafsa.ed.gov • Free Application for Federal Student Aid • Apply online after January 1st, 2013 • MI State Deadline- March 1, 2013 (Ms. Jayne will say END OF FEBRUARY) • Taxes need to be done to be official, but you can estimate and then edit later to meet this deadline. • Full fledged walk-through on this will be held in January at Bay West for all families • This form opens you up for Grants and Loans…
